The James Smart Collection  

at the Urban Archives, Paley Library, Temple University

The Urban Archives houses, among its vast collection of Philadelphia research material, the Library of the old Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. James Smart was a 25-year staff member of The Bulletin, and later a frequent contributor. He later worked  as an editor, public relations executive, author and related occupations. He is gradually providing his papers and other materials to the Archives, to give others access to his research and writings.

1976 BICENTENNIAL MATERIAL:

            Bicentennial Diary:  Reports of news in Philadelphia 200 years on each date, published in Evening Bulletin Sept. 1974 through Sept. 1976 -- research notes, carbons, clippings, source list

            Revolutionary Bulletin: history of the American Revolution with Philadelphia emphasis, tabloid, published monthly in 1976 in the Sunday Bulletin

            20 Decades of American History: a 20 newspaper page U. S. history published in the Bulletin on July 4, 1976

            The Bell Moves at Midnight: dedicatory poem read at ceremony when Liberty Bell was moved from Independence Hall at midnight, 1975-76

            Bicentennial Daybook: daily research on the Revolution issued by National Park Service, Sept. '74 to Dec. '76

            1976 Bicentennial celebration: material assembled by Smart from the late 1960s to 1977, including plans, reports, publications, clippings, news releases, ephemera

            Philadelphia July 4 Celebrations:  1960 to 1990:  news releases, letters, notes, programs of city ceremonies and events, tickets to reserved seats, other ephemera

           Century IV celebration:  1982 (300th anniversary of  founding of Philadelphia:) news releases, etc.

SHACKAMAXON SOCIETY:

            Material on the founding, history and activities of civic activist organization, 1968 to1973 (Smart was vice president.)

 

OLD FORT MIFFLIN:

            Shackamaxon Society's major project was restoration and administration of historic Fort Mifflin, beginning in 1968. Files of Shackamaxon's activities, historical research, maps, photos (many color slides of restoration work, military re-enactments, etc.) 1968 to 1973

BUILDING & REALTY RECORD:

            Tabloid newspaper covering Philadelphia area real estate and construction; copies from founding in 1952 to closing in  1981; valuable resource of history of local residential and commercial development, particularly when it was a weekly paper in the 1950s and '60s; business records from Smart's tenure as publisher, 1977 to 1981.

 

DELAWARE VALLEY BUSINESS:

            Monthly local business magazine; copies and business records from Smart's tenure as publisher, 1980 to 1983; some back copies and ephemera from previous publisher

ALSO:  a collection of guidebooks, annual reports of city departments and agencies and related research material, most from the 1960s
