RIFLI Civics Training Opportunities:
For the first time, Congress has passed legislation mandating that
“educational institutions receiving federal funding are required to hold an educational program pertaining to the United
States Constitution on September 17 of each year.” This day is also known as Constitution and Citizenship Day. RIFLI
is partnering with librarians at libraries where our classes are held to highlight collections and resources related to citizenship
during the week of September 12th to 19th. Please encourage your students to look at the display at their library.
There will also be a civics-related professional development
opportunity on Wednesday, October 26th, from 1-3. Mary Troeger, a citizenship teacher at the International Institute of RI,
will be speaking about the lessons she has learned working with students going through the citizenship process. An INS examiner/interviewer
will also talk to us about the application and interview process with plenty of time for a question and answer session. A
location and more information will follow. Be sure to mark your calendars! RSVP or questions to Karisa at ktashjian@yahoo.com.
