The Kingston Fire Department (KFD) was formed in 1887 and organized into 3 seperate fire companies.
Company 1 was located on Main at Elms St. and designated "Surprise #1". Company 2 was located on Summer Street near Foster
Lane and designated "Governor Bradford #2. Company 3 was located on lower Main Street at Baker Avenue and designated "Pockanocket
#3". All apparatus were hose carts with no pumps and hand drawn to a fire scene. If a fire hydrant was nearby, hose was connected
to the hydrant and a nozzle attached. If there was no hydrants or not enough hose, then whatever makeshift aids available
were used. Firefighters were men who worked in the mills and businesses located near each fire company.
