After a week of sub-freezing temperatures, the Potomac River gathered ice sculptures
around the rushing waters of Great Falls.
I hiked to the main overlooks in Great Falls Park, a National Park in Virginia
and then hiked up river to Virginia's Great Bend State Park.
Some places upstream, the river surface froze all the way across, from
the Virginia shore to the Maryland shore. In a few places where water had not frozen, the waterfowl gathered
to enjoy the cool waters for feeding and resting.
Canada geese and wood ducks seemed to be most prominent, well away from the Virginia
shore, but a merganser duck and a coot were close to my side of the river shore.
