The Griot's Call
Cassandra M. Cato-Louis interviews
DeAma Battle--performer, educator, and founder of Art of Black Dance & Music.
Question: Can you tell us
what first prompted you to establish Art of Black Dance & Music? DeAma Battle: African-American culture is taught
in bits and pieces and is mainly about slavery in America. We began in order to address the lack
of education in schools about African-Americans.
We wanted to explore the
heritage of our people outside of the United States. We looked beyond the U.S. to the shores of the Caribbean and Africa.
