The Liberty, a Boston Clipper Ship

Named for their speed in the late 1840’s and early 1850’s, clipper ships could cross the Atlantic in less than two weeks “clipping” the time taken transport highly prized cargoes. The clipper ship Flying Cloud set a record of 89 days from New York to Claifornia via Cape Horn that stood for over 130 years. Originally built in the shipyards of New England these ships were graceful and fast, each unique and works of art.

Ch Lonetree's C. Quill Gordon CD WCI and our Cayuga's Ipswich Bonnie CGC have produced two wonderful litters. We kept two pups from the second mating. because we could not decide which was the best pup.  Now we are raising both and they have each earned their place at Driftwood Kennel.  Clipper is our first male and, we must admit, there is a difference between the sexes.  Clipper has been a dream to teach the ropes.  He has non of the strong stubborn independence we have seen in the girls, but he has all of their drive and more.

At a young age Driftwood's Coastal Clipper is living up to his namesake.  At nine months of age, Clipper already has his working certificate, showing promise of performance to come. He is fast, bright, bold, and brazen. His sister, Driftwood's Headwind Hedy is not far behind him.   Actually, she may be the better field dog.  Now that she is past her first heat, she is more focussed

Clipper Passed Away in the Morning of October 1st, 2009

A Tribute to Clipper

I find words hard to muster while trying to express what Clipper meant to me, because he meant so much.

Clipper was a legend in his own time. But I will remember him as my companion and my "once in a lifetime dog".  He was my hunting buddy and my partner at performance events. He was the dog I could let off leash to walk alongside me on the marsh or on a street, knowing that one word from me would bring him back to my side.  The dog that followed me from room to room, leaned against my legs, placed his beautiful head under the palm of my hand.  The dog who loved to sit by me as I soaked the day’s worries away and always seemed interested in discussing anything.  He was the dog who earned a spot at the foot of my bed and with whom I shared the sofa after a long hard day.

He was of our own breeding.  We searched the nation looking for the best stud to complement our Bonnie and found him. Bonnie flew to Colorado for two trysts with Gordy. We liked their first litter so much that we repeated the breeding and kept two puppies, not being able to decide between Clipper and his sister Hedy.  It was a decision for which we have no regrets. I have never had a dog that bonded so solidly to me, and I bonded just as strongly to him.

While holding puppy Clipper in my hand, he seemed such a confident and hefty pup. He never lost that bold and confident air. When we went hunting, he was a joy to watch running in the field. In the light of the setting sun, his coat glistened amongst the marsh grass he so loved to dive through.

It has been 12 years since that little puppy snuggled in my lap and today I cradled his head for the last time.

Clipper, with your loving heart, you were always loyal and willing to please.

We were so lucky to have you.

Thank you for being the best dog.

We already miss you so much and always will.
