A Word of Thought
Floods are a major problem in West Virginia. Dredging of Streams
is a very common activity by governmental agencies and private citizens. Dredging results in unstable stream banks,
unstable stream channels, increased flooding downstream, and destroys wildlife and fish habitat. Shade trees and other
vegetation are often removed from the banks during dredging. The West Virginia Council of Trout Unlimited recommends
all dredging be eliminated except for short sections at bridges and culverts. Also it recommends the practice of
cutting trees and other vegetation on stream banks be terminated and replaced with a program to plant native trees and
other native vegetation on the stream banks.
