KEY AUTOCAD CONCEPTS AND SKILLS:

1. The correct procedure to copy an object to new coordinates   of 11,38 is "copy command, select the object, select the lower left corner, then type 11,38".

2. The correct command to type to set a new color so future objects will be yellow without having to change the layer to a different color is "color; yellow".

3. A way to modify dimension style settings is by applying an override.

4. Isometric, top, front and side views are created with the command MVSETUP.

5. In Normal Style Hatch islands are hatched in alternating boundaries inward from the outermost boundary.

6. To specify a style in single line text use the command DTEXT.

7. The “snowflake” symbol found in the Layer Properties Manager allows the freezing or thawing of a layer in a new viewport.

8. When Plotting, to set scale to 1/4" = 1'-0" under "plotted inches=drawing units", select 1=48.

9. To rotate a plot when you print the page select Portrait or Landscape under Page Setup/Layout Settings, then check plot upside-down.

10. When editing text, if no justification is used, the grip appears at the insertion point.

11. Purging in AutoCAD deletes unused layers, blocks and linetypes.

12. With DIMTOFL on, when the dimension text is moved outside the extension lines the dimension line rejoins.

13. The AutoCAD file extension which is automatically assigned to a temporary file is .sv$.

14. A diagonal line on a dimension is called a tick.

15. The scale factor for 1/8" = 1'-0" is 96.

16. Before creating multiline text you must define the paragraph's width.

17. To copy objects from one AutoCAD drawing to another use the COPY CLIP command.

18. In plotting, to plot only a portion of a drawing, in the Page Setup dialog box click on "window".

19. The vertical lines on a horizontal dimension are called "extension lines".

20. The command MIRRTEXT modifies TEXT, DTEXT Commands, Attribute definitions and Variable definitions.

21. Layers can be sorted in "Linetype Properties, Visibility Properties, Name, and Color", but not in "Description".

22. An example of "Modifying a Text Style" is as follows:

From the format menu, choose TextStyle.

In the dialog box, select style and menu.

Under either Font or Effects, change any of the options.

Update the text by clicking Apply.

23. In order to insert a title block and border choose the "Create New Drawing" wizard, then the "Use a Template" wizard.

24. The file extension for linetype files is .LIN.

25. The command DIMSTYLE does not allow you to restore dimension styles.

26. Before calculating the area of a closed shape which uses line segments use the command BPOLY.

27. Entering (+ 5 6) in the command line gives you the result of 11.

28. In Plotting, to make one line (Line 1) Color Blue, line weight .4, and another line (Line 2) Color Red, line weight of .3, complete the following steps:

open Plot Style

select form view

select color Blue

select .4 under line weight

select color Red

select .3 under line weight.

29. When plotting in AutoCAD different colors are used to distinguish lineweights.

30. In a situation where there are three vertical lines (already selected) in the middle of the screen,  and one horizontal line on the left of the screen, to extend the horizontal line to the center vertical line remove the left-most (first) vertical line from the selection.

31. To change 5'-11 15/16" to 6"-0" change the dimension precision.

32. To create a viewport in paper space, type the command MVIEW.

33. To convert an external reference to a block, type xref, select the file, then bind.

34. In the options dialog box, selecting tab, then Noun/Verb selection enables selection before editing.

35. ZOOM VMAX allows you to zoom out to the maximum virtual screen without regeneration.

36. Characteristics of an attribute include Text Formatting, Tag, Prompt and Value Information, but not Dimensions.

37. To write this linetype: _________  __  _________ enter the following: A,1,-.1,.1,-.1.

38. In Paper Space you can add a title block, annotations, and borders, and you can create floating viewports, but you can not turn off layers in individual viewports.

39. Aperture size is set under the Options dialog box.

40. To turn on demand loading of Xrefs choose:

            Tools menu

            Options

            Open and Save

41. The PURGE command removes one unused level of reference from a drawing at a time.

42. Noun/Verb allows an object to be selected before starting a command. Noun Verb is selected in the options dialog box, under selections.

43. Entering the XREF command will provide a list of external references contained in a drawing.

44. If both chamfer distances are set to zero the two selected objects will trim or extend until they meet.

45. Dragging the cursor from lower right to top left will grab all objects that are partially or entirely within the window created.

46. To fillet all the vertices of a polyline choose Fillet in the Modify menu, then enter P and select the polyline.

47. In the External References Dialog Box you can detach an existing XREF, attach a new XREF, change an XREF path. and reload or unload XREFs , but it is impossible to detach a new XREF.

48. In AutoSnap a "marker" is a symbol that displays the object snap location when the cursor moves over a snap point on the object.

49. When the command PLINE is entered the command options include arc, halfwidth, length, undo and width.

50. The Create New Drawing - Use  a Template wizard is used to insert a title block and border.

51. To print text 1/4" high in a 1/2" = 1' drawing set the text to 6" high.

52. When Leader is chosen, if all the points are specified, text width is specified, and enter is hit, then a multiline text editor box appears.

53. To import a saved image into AutoCAD select Raster Image in the Insert menu.

54. To create a Spline by specifying points:

Click Draw menu

Click Spline

Specify the start point for the spline

59. Isometric Snap/Grid mode is used to make 2D drawings which appear to be 3D.

60. To update an Xref in an open drawing:

            Choose Xref Manager

            Select the Xref to reload

            Click on reload

68. The procedure to copy an object multiple times in a drawing is:

            Select Copy

            Select the Object

            Select the Base Point

            Select the New Location

69. In figuring the area of an object which has a hollow area within it:

Draw a pline around the perimeter of the object

Draw a second pline around the hollow area

            Enter the AREA command

Enter O for Object

Select the first pline around the object

Repeat Area (enter O for Object)

Select the Second pline

Subtract the second pline from the first.

*Note: this is for AutoCAD 2000, in 2004 and newer there is an integral subtract option in the AREA command.
