THE BASIC CHATTER.....
Over the past two years, I have enjoyed a poetry workshop and
support group called StarLite Cafe. It was not a professional group, but its owner and management team believed poetry
should be enjoyed by the masses. I appreciated this philosophy and participated by hosting several challenges and occassionally
posting poetry.
Sadly, the creator of this site passed away a year ago.
The site was sold and a new management team assumed control of the workshop site in October 2007.
I would like my readers to know that I have formally disassociated
myself from this site as of April 18, 2008. The new ownership has chosen to pursue a vanity-press mentality risking
the credibility of all associated with SLC, in my professional opinion.
Additionally, this site censors its writers and poets and does
not celebrate freedom of speech, nor is there tolerance for cultural diversity or opinions.
In discussing my concern with several peers and writing professionals, I have learned SLC has been reported
to various “writer-beware” sites alerting writers to their policy
of restriction of speech and the written word. Complaints have apparently been
filed to alert investigatory processes to monitor SLC as a potential site for scams and vanity press activity.
If you are considering becoming involved in SLC, please check their reputation closely. Due to the
management change, the site is relatively new. If you are asking me for a recommendation, I encourage my friends
and peers to consider joining sites that are dedicated to supporting their members and follow an ethical, professional
standard that is important to our profession and its integrity.
