AOI Secretary Seymour Selig Rings in AOI's New Year, dropping AOI's own New Year's Ball

When AOI resurrected its tradition of meeting on the first day of the year, it called for the return of the Governor Shepherd Statue to the John A. Wilson (District) Building during an outdoor rally on Jan. 1, 2005.  Twenty-eight days later the statue was back in place.

Not wanting the success of our gathering to be a one-time-only-event, we continued the aged-old tradition of meeting on New Year's Day by gathering at the Pier 7/Channel Inn every January 1.  This year, more than 71 members and guests were present to enjoy fellowship, stories, toasts, libations and some great canapes.

Keep January 1,  from noon - 2pm open on your 2009 calendar!

With the assistance of WJAI's Esther Williams and Davie Yarborough, AOI members were treated to an afternoon of music performed by Eric Wheeler (Bass), Joel Holmes (Keyboard), Terrance Arnett (Drums) and Stan Killian (Tenor Sax).  Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train" and "Sophisticated Lady" were just two of the many selections the quartet performed.

Retired WMAL Radio Personality Bill Mayhugh Contributes

AOI members will remember that Bill Mayhue, retired after 30-years at WMAL radio as their late night music host, kicked-off our Feb. 2006 Reminiscenses Program.  Bill returned to enjoy the Washington Jazz Arts Institute Ensemble's performance in celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month.  Bill commented briefly on the many venues in Washington that support jazz, his fond memories of being a drummer in a quintet and he applauded the performance, skill and abilities of today's guest artists from the WJAI.

AOI Honors District Mayor Anthony A. Williams with its first
Governor Shepherd Award for Civic Improvements

Numerous speakers including AOI's President Bill Brown, Historian Nelson Rimensnyder and member Joseph Grano described parallels between Williams' improvements to city services, preservation, development and economic resurgence with those of 1872 Territorial Governor Alexander R. Shepherd whose efforts to improve the city helped to stave off attempts to relocate the Nation's Capital to St. Louis ( as championed by Horrace Greeley and nearly coming to a vote in Congress).  During his near hour at the podium, the Mayor used the opportunity to acknowledge AOI's efforts to preserve the L'Enfant and McMillan Plans and return the statue of Governor Shepherd to the District Building.  He saluted 99-year old AOI past-president Harold Gray (Palisades) for his success in reviving the AOI in the early 1990's and praised past-president Al Wheeler (Georgetown) for his continuing leadership and contributions to the organization.  In the lighthearted atmospher among AOI 'friends', the Mayor used the opportunity to poke fun at himself, recount his accomlishments and lament some efforts which he was unable to accomplish during his eight years in office.

The 15 inch high bronz-resign statuette of Governor Shepherd was sculpted by artist Guy Tedesco of Jeffersonville, Indiana from the original U.S.J. Dunbar statue that stands in front of the John A. Wilson (District) Building.  The Dunbar statue was errected in 1909 and unceremoniously removed to a public works yard in 1979 when the redevelopment of  Pennsylvania Avenue did not call for its incorporation into the final design for either Freedom Plaza or Pershing Park.  After a rally on January 1, 2005, in front of the District Building to bring public attention to the plight of the statue, the statue was returned to the District Building 28 days later through the efforts of Councilmembers Jim Graham, Jack Evans, Council Secretary Phyllis Jones, then DDOT Director Dan Tangherlini and a consortium of contrators who Councilmember Graham recruited to rig, remove, move and return the statue to its present location on the NW corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 14th Street.
