History of only known Empress Sedan in US revealed!!
Goliaths top of the line luxury model was named Luxus in the European market, but those imported to the
US were badged as the Empress. They featured such options as leather reclining seats, cigar lighter, 2 speed wipers,
fog lamps, horn ring, and additional chrome trim including wheel trim rings.
They were also equipped with the 63 hp "Tiger" engine, with dual carbs, special valve mechanism, auxillary
oil cooler, high speed transmission, and high compression heads, as used in the 1100 (Tiger) Coupe' models.

Well, at this point we only know of one of these models in the US, and I have just been recently enlightened
as to the history of this car from David "Rimspoke" Brower of NC.
I had made some inquiries about Goliath autos in the early 1980's, and got a letter and two pics from a
Ray Williams in PA, (the original owner, I think) who had this Empress sedan along with a Tiger Coupe and many parts,
including factory workshop tool made by Mantra, for sale for $800. David tells me that Ray was a Goliath dealer
in the '50's & '60's, and claimed to be the sole east coast importer. The Empress sat on his showroom floor but
was never sold, so he took it home. In 1964, his son took the Empress to college at the Univ. of PA, and drove it until
he finished school in 1968. It then sat for 18 years until David Brower bought it. I had to pass on it at the time,
as I was a poor college student!

It seems that not long after that, David "Rimspoke" Brower of NC bought the car with parts and parts
car, trailered them to NC and got the Empress running again.
During the time he had it, he added dual exhaust, added the optional wheel trim rings that it should have
had, added the headlight "eyebrows", and painted it a two tone black and grey. While David had it, his wife was expecting
and adds: "When my first child was born in Jan.1988, there was a serious snowstorm. We took the Empress to the hospital
that night because I thought we had a better chance of making it through the snow with front wheel drive. My son is now in
college."
David then sold the car to a Fredrick James.

Then, at some point , in the 1990's, the Empress was sold to John Russell who lives in California, and still
has the car. When I bought my 1960 Hansa 1100 sedan, I had many questions about restoration, and was directed to John
to answer them. He had talked about the many Goliaths he had over the years and sent me pics of the Empress. He
said he had gotten it from NC, so I then suspected that the car I found out about in '82 and this one was the same car.
David Brower recently discovered this website, emailed me and said "that's my old Empress!" Now we know!!
Any other Empress sedans out there?

She now has two Tigers: Grrrrrrr!! About a year after buying her first Goliath, she very wisely bought
Dee's car to be used as a parts car. Hopefully, she'll find some useful items!

Christine and her husband of Leyland, NC recently acquired this 1960 Goliath Tiger Coupe at an auction.
It is an unrestored example of another solid NC car.

Borgward Owners Club Meet 2005

Here's a group of Borgwards attending the 2005 Borgward Owners Club Meet in Morro Bay, California, the weekend of September
22-25.
Monica Borgward, daughter of Carl Borgward was the guest of honor.
The meet included a banquet, tours of local historical sites, and included a scenic drive through the Morro Bay area
by a caravan of Borgward cars. There were parts and prizes galore! I hear a good time was had by all! Thank
to Allan Woodcock for this picture.
