Atlatl Competition Scores

I've been throwing the Atlatl at conventions since around mid-1997 (I think..), and since I'm not constantly at it (I only throw at gatherings), it's taken me a long while to finally begin to get control over my body and what it's doing when I throw. In June 2002, right before the Bald Eagle gathering, I decided I would start to track my progress on the ISAAC (International Standard Atlatl Accuracy Competition) and Local Competitions. My sister, Jen, also has an atlatl, and is still learning to control things, but she's improving. She took her first ISAAC in the Bald Eagle 2002 gathering, and I've decided I would also track her progress. You can find links to the charts I've made below.

ISAACs are always thrown the same way. Five darts from 15 meters, and five darts from 20 meters. Local Competitions, however, vary from gathering to gathering, and year to year, so there'll be explainations on how they functioned (where available--I may sometimes forget) in their individual pages. Greyed-out entries mean either there was no Local Competition, or the person in question did not compete.

On all scores, Blue indicates an improvement, Red indicates a decline, and Green indicates no change. Because some of these charts have a lot of information, it's highly reccomended you view them in at least 800x600 resolution. And no, the tables don't align perfectly with one another. :P

In the chart below Accuracy is the average of the last 10 ISAAC throws (decimals rounded off until Mastery). It's not any sort of official rating, it's just a personal score for me and Jen. Hopefully I remember to update it regularly. ;P

Our Atlatls and Darts
Updated July 14, 2003

I currently use an atlatl that my father crafted, which I've named the Aeolus Striker. It's similar to a Wappasening, but with alterations that prevent the atlatl from jabbing one in the wrist. I also have a Wappasening atlatl that I've altered by shaving down the back and front curve pieces. This is to minimise my hitting the backs of my darts when I throw, and jabbing my wrist when I snap.

I use 7' Aluminum Darts, crafted out of arrow shaft components. They are very lightweight, which requires less effort to throw, but also makes them highly succeptible to wind unless I put forth more effort to counter.

Jennifer currently has two atlatls. She has a Wappasening, unaltered, and an atlatl made by Bob Marble that she bought for $10. A fine introductory atlatl, and good for any interested atlatlists on a budget. That atlatl doesn't really have a name, though, so I just call it a Marble atlatl. Jen's in the process of adding decorations to it.

Jen uses 7' Aluminum Darts, crafted out of arrow shaft components, 7' Wooden Darts, and also owns a couple of Cane Darts.

"Atlatle Competition bridges generation gap" - July 7, 2002 - NBC25 - Link to Origin

On August 31, 2002, we had a fellow taping for a documentary for Ohio PBS and schools, and I got to be in it! :D We'll see if the footage is actually used. Of note, the cameraman now knows that a plexiglass shield is NOT a defense for atlatl darts. :>
