Reading Through The Bible Historically

Reading the Bible has always been a daunting task for most Americans.  Just where do I begin?  Is there a way to read the Bible so that I understand what it is trying to tell me rather than hopping from one scripture passage to another? The answer is yes, reading the Bible historically. By reading the Bible in chronological order of events, you gain a much greater understanding and perspective of what sacred scripture is trying to reveal to you, the reader.  With this greater understanding also comes the ability to more easily recall scripture passages because you have a timeline from which to base the scripture. The chronological sequence of historical events in the Bible consists of twelve understandable historical periods:

1. The History of the Early World
2. The Patriarchs
3. Israel in Egypt
4. The Conquest of Canaan
5. The Judges
6. The United Kingdom
7. The Divided Kingdom
8. The Exile
9. The Return
10. The Maccabean Revolt
11. The New World
12. Revelation

As you read the Bible historically, you will discover the Old
Testament world was ruled by six peoples or nations. These nations
were: Egypt, Assyria, Babelon, Persia, Greece and Rome. A great way to remember this fact is to associate the first letters of each nation with the phrase: Eat A Big Purple GRape.
