Henckel Family

Charles Henckel was born in Germany. There is a Carl Henkel listed as an immigrant and arriving in the United States by the ship "America". It sailed from Bremen to New York, arriving in New York on July 3rd, 1865. He was 24 years old and worked as a cart maker. We think this is our Charles Henckel at this time (2002). According to his Naturalization papers in Albany, he did sail from Bremen.

Charles told his grandson, George Henckel, many times, that he was from "Essen, Germany".  Charles married Mary Simon around 1867. Later, in 1874, he was naturalized in Albany, NY. The languages spoken at home were German and English. His family is listed in the 1880 Census, living at 581 Clinton Ave, Albany, NY. Charles and Mary are listed as being born in Hess-Darmstadt. He was working as a cabinet maker (carpenter). In  1892, the state census shows George & Mary Henckel still  living at Clinton Avenue, Albany with three of their children, George, Fredrick, and Adella.

In the 1900 Federal Census, Charles and Mary were still living at the same address with their daughter Adele, who was 20 years old at that time. They owned the house with no mortgage. The boys, George and Frederick were not listed, as they were away at college. Charles & Mary were still living on Clinton Ave in 1910. He was 69 years of age and working as a carpenter at the YMCA.

In 1920, Charles was living with his son George & daughter-in-law in East Orange, New Jersey at 229 So. Clinton Ave. He passed away in 1923 and is buried in Eagle Hill Cemetery (St Paul's),  Albany, New York.

The first Henckel immigrant in our family was Charles Henckel. He was born in Germany. ( He told his grandson, George Henckel, many times, that he was from "Essen, Germany".) He immigrated to the United States in the year 1865. He was naturalized in 1874 in Albany, NY. Languages spoken were German and English. He was listed in the Albany Directories of 1889, 1890, and 1891, as living at 581 Clinton avenue, Albany, and working as a carpenter. The family attended the St Paul's Lutheran Church, in Albany, NY. The following information was found in the church records:
