2007-8 season will mark the 75th Annivarsary of the Talbot Dance Club
In an interview with senior member Everett Mavel he pointed out that the current Talbot Dance Club had its roots
in 1933. He was a young teenager at that time and recalls one of the first organizers was Mr. "Tiny" Vineyard,
of all things - the Talbot County Tax Assessor!
The club at that time was called the Citillion Dance Club with its four-dances-a-year program held at the Old Armory
on Harrison and South Streets. By 1972, when Everett retired, the club had changed its name to the current Talbot
Dance Club and had moved to the Tidewater Inn's Gold Room.
The Tidewater was purchased by "a big insurance company" and decided to add carpeting to the floor of the Gold Room to
better serve its use then, but created a problem for dancers who need a large wooden dance floor to show off their steps.
At that time the current Elk's Lodge became the home of the Club and continues to this day.
During this evolution of the Club it was searching for a suitable live-music dance band to play at its season's
seven dances. For the Moment was a local Rock & Roll band in the area. They were
approached to consider adding ballroom music to their repetoiore and they agreed. Unlike today, where the Club brings
in a rotating selection of bands, For the Moment was hired to do all seven dances for many years' running. Some
of those original band organizers are still among its loyal players. When they are on stage, stop by to say hello and
thanks for all these many years of service to the Club.
Thanks to Everett for the information for this webpage. Incidentially, Everett served the Club for many years as
Secretary/Treasurer back in the 70's and 80's.
