How the Kenya Project started:
In June of 2003, a nine year old boy named Corey
went on vacation with his family to Kenya. While visiting the Empopongi Primary school, he saw a girl with many flies
on her face sitting on the ground. She reached up for Corey's water bottle. He gave it to her. This upset
him. But he became even more upset when he found out that:
- The 130 Children were given only 1/4 a cup of corn each school
day. Often it was their only meal that day.
- Few children had decent clothes or the school uniform
required by Kenyan Law. No children had shoes.
- Students had to walk up to two miles to a dirty stream to carry
a bucket of water back to the school. Many children got very sick from the polluted water.
- Two small classrooms with leaky tin roofs were the only school
rooms for all the children from kindergarten to 8th grade.
- The children had to relieve themselves in the bush as they
had no latrines or bathrooms.
- They were few or no textbooks, pens, pencils or readers.
- The student's parents were required to give money to build
classrooms, provide books and uniforms but the nearest employment is 80 miles away.
Corey thought it was unfair that children just
like him had so much less than he did. He was determined to do something about it ,so, when he went home to his school
in Maywood New Jersey; he went classroom to classroom collecting donations for this one little school. He collected
$1,495.00! That was the start of the Maywood Rotary Kenya Project.

Each July, we organize a week long volunteer trip. Each volunteer pays their own way
to give "hands on" help by teaching, providing medical help, building a classroom, working in the school garden or other
needed projects.
