Since part of knowing our past is knowing our family history, I've set aside this page for the main families that
I'm researching. The surnames include ADAMS, ALWARD, AWL, BEATTY, BOONE, BOWSER, BROWN, CALDWELL, COLLINS, CUPPLES, DE GRAEF, ELDER,
ELLIMAN, GRIM, HARRIS, HARTLEY, HOFFER, HOOGTEELING, KAUFFMAN, KIPP, McBRIDE, MILLARD, MOCKENHAUPT, PARKER, PATTON, PHILIPS,
RUSSELL, SIMPSON, SLAGLE, STURGEON, SWART, SWIGART, VANTINE, WENZ.
I have much more information on these families and am always willing to share.
See the outlines below.....

The Schlegel Family Cemetery in Berks County PA.
ADAMS - Abigail ADAMS,born in 1825 to Samuel S. ADAMS and Susannah Elizabeth SHOBERT. She married Melchia HOFFER at the
age of 13. Little is known of what happened to she and her husband after 1869. Their children moved to Ohio with the
exception of two daughters, but I do not know where Melchia and his wife went,
or where they are buried. Melchia is the son of William HOFFER who apparently resided in Huntingdon County, PA prior to their arrival in Armstrong County,
PA. According to others who are researching the HOFFER surname, William and his wife cared for their grandchildren after their daughter died. They moved to Armstrong County
about 1836. Prior to their arrival in Huntingdon County, they lived in Cumberland County. There is a will for a Melchior HOFFER, who died in 1843 who mentions his son William.
Adams Family Documents by Linda Simmons
ALWARD - My grandmother, Florence
Jeannette ALWARD was born in 1898 in Oakmont, PA to Bruce Sproul ALWARD
and Ida Belle McBRIDE. Bruce Sproul
ALWARD was born in 1876 to Forster ALWARD and Hannah Mariah KIPP. He was a collector for American Oil Company. Forster
was born in Harrisburg in 1832. He served in Co A 102nd Regt. Pa Vol. during the Civil War. He was promoted to Captain and
was wounded in the side by a mini-ball at Cedar Creek. A carpenter by trade, his injury was aggravated by his chosen occupation.
He was the son of Henry ALWARD and Eliza
ELDER. Little is known of Henry. He was born about 1795, was a
clerk in a bank in Harrisburg, married Eliza Awl Elder 23 May 1818 and
moved to Pittsburgh sometime after 1830. He is in Allegheny County by 1840, but had disappeared by 1850. There is a Henry ALWARD who served from Pittsburgh during the Mexican War, enlisting in 1846
and dying shortly after his return. It is believed that Henry ALWARD is the
son of Henry ALWARD and Rebecca HARRIS.
A Rebecca ELWARD, aged 79, is living with Wesley
BOWMAN and his wife Tamar in Freeport, Armstrong County, PA in 1850.
Tamar was the daughter of Henry ALWARD
and Rebecca HARRIS. Also living with them in Eliza ELWARD. Forster is granted leave due to an illness in
the family in 1865, and at that time, Eliza ALWARD was in the Pittsburgh Infirmary.
Forster married twice, first to Mary
Rossiter VANHORN and secondly to Hannah
Mariah KIPP. Henry ALWARD, Sr. was born in 1770 to John ALWARD and Priscilla TAYLOR. They were residents of Northumberland
County and lived in or near Sunbury, PA. John ALWARD had been born in Basking
Ridge, NJ in 1747 to Henry ALWARD and Mary
COX. He lived in Muncy Creek and possibly also in Berks County. His father Henry was born in 1718 in Woodbridge, NJ to Henry ALWARD, Jr.
and Sarah COMPTON. He is said to be buried at the Presbyterian Church at Basking
Ridge where he was a member. I did search the cemetery and did not find him, although several ALWARDS are interred there. Henry ALWARD, Jr. was born In Woodbridge,
NJ in 1695. He served in Col. Farmar's militia in 1715. Henry Jr. was the son of Henry ALWARD, Sr. and Judith HENDRICKS. Henry Sr. was probably born in England. The
name of his father has not been determined. Some say Henry, others say Thomas. We do know that his father died when Henry
was young and his mother Anna married again, first to Peter DESIGNEY and
next to Robert ROGERS. The dates given for these marriages are only months
apart and that does make me wonder. Robert ROGERS' will mentions his "son-in-law"
Henry ALLWOOD.
AWL - Elizabeth AWL was
born in Lancaster (now Dauphin) County, PA in 1761. She married John ELDER, Jr.
in 1778. Elizabeth was the daughter of Jacob
AWL and Sarah STURGEON. Jacob
was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1727. He served during the Revolutionary War, and also during the Fronteir Wars, taking
part in the Battle of Bushy Run. He was one of the five commissioners who laid out the town of Harrisburg. He was a relative
of John HARRIS for whom Harrisburg is named.
BEATTY - Elizabeth Jane BEATTY
was the daughter of Robert BEATTY and Sarah
Ann GRIM. She was born in 1848 in Armstrong County, PA. After the death of her first husband, Joseph C. McBRIDE, she married David McKINLEY, a resident of
Jefferson County, PA. Robert BEATTY was a blacksmith in Manorville, Armstrong
County, PA. He served in Co K 104th Regt. Pa Infantry attaining the rank of Corporal. He was born in 1826 to William BEATTY and Isabella CALDWELL. William BEATTY was also a blacksmith. He was born in eastern PA, and may have been the son of William BEATTY of Chester County, PA.
BOONE - Sarah BOONE married
Conrad ADAMS who was a neighbor of Benjamin
BOONE and Eve LOFTER in Northumberland
County. They named their children Benjamin and Eve and one of the descendants apparenty stated that Sarah
was a cousin to Daniel BOONE in a letter written about their ancestors. Little
else is known. She is mentioned in a settlement document that mentions all of Benjamin's
heirs. After Conrad's death, she married the handyman, Conrad LAMBERSON and later moved to Armstrong County, PA.
BROWN - My Grandmother Marie Kimber BROWN was a first generation American, being born in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, PA to
Arthur Edward (or Edward Arthur) BROWN and Kinbury
Parker ELLIMAN. They married in England in 1886 and had 5 children, one of whom died on their way to America. Arthur was born in 1862 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England to Edward Arthur BROWN and Elizabeth EDWARDS. He was a blacksmith.
Edward BROWN was born about 1826 in Walsall, England. He ran a pub and was
at 4 Foresters Arms in Wednesbury in 1881. He had a grandson, John LATHAM,
living with him who was older than his son Arthur. In the 1841 census he is
in the home of William and Susannah BROWN
CALDWELL - Isabella CALDWELL
was born about 1790, probably to James CALDWELL and Frances NEILSON. James CALDWELL was born in Greencastle, Franklin
County, PA in 1759 and moved to Westmoreland County carrying two of his children in baskets on either side of a pack horse.
The family settled near Wallace's Fort near what is now Cokeville, but at one time was called Broad Fording. He is said to
have served in the Revolutionary War, although I have not checked that out as yet. James
was the son of Robert (b. 1738) and Margaret
(nee unknown) CALDWELL and the grandson of William W. CALDWELL of Ireland.
CUPPLES - Sarah Sabina CUPPLES
was born in Mifflin County, PA in 1835, the daughter of James CUPPLES and Ann Elizabeth RUSSELL. She married twice, her first husband, John HARTLEY having died at Andersonville Prison during the Civil War. She married second John DEARING. James CUPPLES was born in 1789 and was the son
of James and Mary Ann (nee unknown) CUPPLES.
James Sr. is said to be the son of John
CUPPLES, Sr. and was born in County Antrim, Ireland in 1758. The Cupples'
came over the year before the Revolutionary War, settling first in Chester County. It is said that their ship was chased by
an English-Man-of-War, but a dense fog saved them.
DE GRAAF - Hannah DE GRAAF,
born about 1750 in New York, was the daughter of Michael DE GRAAF and Rachel SWART. She married John KIPP
and they lived in York, now Adams County, PA. They settled in the Mt. Pleasant area and attended the Dutch Church there. Michael DE GRAAF was born about 1725 in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess Co, NY to Abram DE GRAAF and Elizabeth PARMENTIER. Michael was in Mt. Pleasant, Adams Co, PA as early as 1772 where he is listed on the tax records. He and two
sons signed a petition to Congress in 1783 regarding land in Kentucky. Abram
was born in 1695 to Moses De GRAEF and Hester
DELAMETER (LE MAISTER). Moses was from Dieppe, France and was the son
of Jean LE COMTE of Picardy, Somme, France and Marye LAURENS. Jean was a Huguenot whose family fled the country
after Louis XIV invaded. He came to America about 1674, uniting with the church there at the earliest chance. Since they didn't
have a dwelling, and there were no vacant homes available they lived in the constable's (Demarest's) home and stored their
belongings in his barn. The dutch word for LE COMTE ( the count) is DE GRAEF, thus the name change. Some sources say he was the 6th great grandson of Louis IX, King of France
but I have not seen any documentation. He probably arrived from England to New Amsterdam aboard the ship, "The Diamond."
ELDER - Eliza ELDER was
born about 1798 to John ELDER, Jr. and
Elizabeth AWL in Dauphin Co., PA. She married Henry ALWARD and they
moved to Pittsburgh, PA. She apparently lost her husband sometime between 1840 and 1850. John
ELDER, Jr. was a son of Rev. John ELDER ("the Fighting Parson") by his
second wife, Mary SIMPSON. John ELDER,
Jr. fought in the Revolutionary War. He made the rank of Captain. He was a farmer, teacher, surveyor and sheriff. It
is said he erected the first steel plant at Middletown, PA. His father, Rev. John
ELDER was a Presbyterian minister at the Paxtang Church. He went to school at Edinburgh, Scotland and was the son of
Robert ELDER and his wife Eleanor.
ELLIMAN - Kinbury Parker ELLIMAN
was born in 1865 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England to John ELLIMAN and
Kinbury PARKER. He came to America in 1894 and was naturalized in 1896. He
was born in 1835 in Bilston, Staffordshire, England. His death certificate listed his parents as James and Eliza (FANTON)
ELLIMAN. James ELLIMAN was baptized
in 1804 in Rochford, England. He was the son of James ELLIMAN and Eleanor REYNOLDS. James ELLIMAN was born abt 1764 in Pauntly.
GRIM - Sarah Elizabeth GRIM,
wife of Robert BEATTY was born in 1822 to George
GRIM and Ann Elizabeth COLLINS. She was born probably in either Westmoreland
or Armstrong County, PA. Her father settled in Washington Twp. Westmoreland County, later moving to Buffalo Twp. Armstrong
County and then to the area around Kelly Station in Armstrong County. George GRIM
was probably born in the area of York or Adams County about 1783. His wife was from Maryland.
HARRIS - Rebecca HARRIS is the daughter of Joseph HARRIS and Tamar REES. She was born about 1771 in Northumberland
County, PA. She married Henry ALWARD. In 1850 she is living with her daughter
Tamar and Tamar's husband Wesley BOWMAN in Freeport, Armstrong County, PA. Rebecca
is buried in Danville, PA but I do not know the date she died at this time. Tamar
and Wesley moved on to Elvira, Clinton Co, IA and they are both buried there.
I am related to Rebecca's son Henry
ALWARD who married Eliza ELDER who
is also living with the BOWMAN'S in 1850. Joseph HARRIS was born in 1740 and died in 1815. He is buried in Sunbury, Northumberland County, PA. His wife
was born about 1745 and died in 1819. Joseph HARRIS is the son of Samuel HARRIS and Elizabeth MILLARD of Berks County, PA. Samuel HARRIS was born in 1704 in Warwickshire, England. to Samuel HARRIS, Sr. and Elizabeth KING. He died in
Union Twp., Berks County, PA in 1754. He was a Quaker and may have come to America in 1729. His will did not mention children,
but his daughter-in-law, Elizabeth CHESTNUTWOOD, wife of Mordecai HARRIS mentioned her husband's brother, Joseph HARRIS
of Sunbury. Samuel HARRIS, Sr. was born in 1674 in Warwickshire and married
Elizabeth KING in 1703. She was the daughter of Thomas KING of Cubbington. Samuel Sr. was the son of George HARRIS and Ann NICHOLLS. George HARRIS, born in 1635 was the son of George
and Katharine HARRIS.
HARTLEY - Little is known of the
HARTLEY family. Matilda Elizabeth HARTLEY
is the daughter of John HARTLEY and Sarah
Sabina CUPPLES. She was born in 1861 in Mifflin County, PA and married Milton
Clay KAUFFMAN about 1880. Her father, John HARTLEY was born in Centre,
PA and died at Andersonville Prison, Sumter Co, GA in 1864. He was a laborer. He served in Co I 149th PA Volunteers, enlisting
as a Private. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of the Wilderness. A letter written to his wife, Sarah, said he was taken prisoner on the 5th. He had black hair, brown eyes and a dark complexion and stood
5 feet 8 inches tall. His military records show his age as 23 in a document dated in 1865. I do not know if this was his age
then, or when he was drafted in 1863. John and Sarah married in Newton Hamilton, PA in 1857.
HOFFER - Sarah Elizabeth HOFFER was born in 1854 in Armstrong County, PA to Melchia HOFFER
and Abigail (Caroline?) ADAMS.
It is not known what happened to her parents as they disappear from the area after 1869. A note on an old family history outline
written by my grandfather had WV near the HOFFER surname. Melchia's children moved to OH with the exception of two
daughters who remained in Armstrong Co. Melchia, born in 1813 is probably the son of William HOFFER who
was living in Armstrong County as early as the mid 1830's. He moved with his family from Huntingdon County and was originally
from Cumberland County. The move was made with grandchildren, after the death of their daughter. The grandchildren are living
close to Melchia. William and
family may have moved to Clarion County. William was born in 1781, and was
probably the son of Melchior HOFFER
by his first wife. The first wife's name is unknown, but he married second Martha
(Mattie) McCLELLAND. His will names his son William, but most of the
property went to the children of his second marriage. Other children by the first marriage were Mary and Charlotte. Melchior's parents are not known. He was born in PA on 16 July 1764 and died 31 Mar 1843. There
is a Melchior HOFFA born 12 July 1764 to Johann
Melchior HOFFA and Maria Charlotta FRIESS. He is said to have married
Margaret McCLELLAND and is said to have died before 1800. I do not know if
there is a connection, but the coincidences are obvious. Perhaps he married Margaret
first, and since the name changed perhaps that is why there is no further info on him after 1800. The child named Charlotte may have been named for her grandmother.
HOOGTEELING - There are many spellings for the HOOGTEELING surname and space does not allow me to list them all. My line begins with Annatie HOOGTEELING who was born in 1762 to Hezekiah and Maria (DE GRAEF) HOOGTEELING. She married Thomas
VANTINE, probably in the Dutch Reformed Church in the Conewago Low Dutch Settlement in Adams County, PA. The DE GRAEF line connects with my other DE
GRAEF line. Hezekiah was the son of Wilhelmus HOOGTALING and Maritje TAPPAN and was born in Kingston,
NY in 1726. I have additional info on this family.
KAUFFMAN - specifically the family of Albert
John KAUFFMAN, born 1892 in Granville, Mifflin County, PA to Milton Clay KAUFFMAN
and Matilda Elizabeth HARTLEY. He left home at an early age, after his
father was jailed, thinking there were too many children for his mother to care for alone. He spent some time out west, but
eventually settled in Allegheny County. He had nothing to do with his father and did not attend his funeral. He did care for
his own family, during the depression giving money to family members who had little. This upset his mother-in-law, but he
only answered that they were family. More questions than answers are available for the rest of the family. Some of the children
are recorded as being the children of Milton and Anna WILLIAMS. It is not known if he married her, or if this was an error. No information on her has been
found other than her name on the certificate. Milton married Matilda Elizabeth HARTLEY about 1880 according to census information, but a child born in 1883 is listed as
the child of Anna WILLIAMS in his death certificate. Milton's death certificate states that he was the child of John KAUFFMAN
and Mary MILLER. Every other piece of evidence shows him to be the child of
John E. KAUFFMAN and Margaret MASHMAN.
Milton was born in Patterson, Juniata County, PA in 1862.
MCBRIDE - Joseph C. MCBRIDE was born about 1848 in Pennsylvania. He died between 1876 and 1880 when his wife is listed
as a widow. He served in the Civil War. His military records say he was born in Warren, PA. He may be the Joseph C. MCBRIDE living in Moon Twp., Allegheny Co, PA with Alexander
MCBRIDE in 1850. He married Elizabeth
Jane BEATTY and lived for a time in Armstrong County, PA. Little else
is know of this family.
MOCKENHAUPT - Alban MOCKENHAUPT
was born in Nauroth, Germany in 1910. He moved to America and raised a family there. He was the son of Peter MOCKENHAUPT and Katharina ARNDT. Peter was the son of Peter MOCKENHAUPT and Maria Anna WEBER and was born in 1869, also in Nauroth. Peter MOCKENHAUPT,
Sr. was the son of Johann Peter MOCKENHAUPT and Maria Elisabetha SEIFNER. He was born in Elkenroth, Germany in 1841. Johann
Peter was born about 1815 and married Maria at the Catholic Church of
Gebhardshain.
PARKER - Kinbury PARKER
was born in West Bromwick, Staffordshire, England in 1836. She married John ELLIMAN
in 1860 and came to America in the late 1800's. She was the daughter of Richard
and Ann PARKER. Richard was
born about 1805 to Joseph PARKER and Elizabeth
LEGG who were married in Wolverhampton in 1805.
SLAGLE - This line begins with my grandfather, Charles Edwin SLAGLE, born in 1897 in Mosgrove, Armstrong County, PA. He was the child of Wilmer Lloyd SLAGLE and Mary Ann PATTON. He worked for the
railroad, being a railroad station manager for many years before managing the produce yard in Pittsburgh. His father, Wilmer was the son of Washington SLAGLE
and Sarah HOFFER. Washington
was the son of Abraham SLAGLE and Christina
BOWSER and was born in 1852.Abraham was born in 1818 and is believed
to be the son of Harmon (aka Hiram
and Herman) SLAGLE and his wife
Barbara. Barbara's last name
is given as HOTTENBURG in some records, but there are no HOTTENBURGS in the state of PA at any time during the 1800's. There is a Herman
SLAGLE born to Christian SLAGLE and his wife Anna Maria in 1793 in Northumberland County. This may be our Harmon. Christian was the son Johann Christian
SCHLEGEL, Jr. and Catharine CONRAD.Christian was born on the Schlegel
Adventure, the family's property in Berks County, PA in 1765. Johann was born
in PA in 1744 to Johann Christian SCHLEGEL, Sr. and wife Catharina. Johann Sr. arrived at Philadelphia aboard the "Bilander
Townsend" in 1737 from Germany.
As always, I'm anxious to hear from anyone with further info on these families. I will continue to add information
as time allows.
