September 16th: I have my dress nearly done.  I was up until 2:00 AM the night before attending the Fevstival.  I'll do an up date with detail photos in the near future.

July 15, 2005: I've been busy cutting out the pattern and fabric of my dress.  So far so good.  The underskirt is nearly completed.  I followed the pattern but I made a waistband for the underskirt so it can be interchangable with the overskirt.  I used 4 sets of hook and eyes to close the waist of the underskirt.  It fits very nicely over the hoopskirt and bumroll.  I still need to hem the bottom.  Enjoy the photo of the kits playing inside of the hoop skirt.

July 4, 2005:  I spent too much time redoing James the Elder's slopes that I didn't get much done.  I did get the underskirt sewn completely but not fitted into the waist band.

July 2, 2005:  I cut the bumroll pattern using the Simplicity patern less the girdle thing.  To save a little money, I used an old broadcloth dress shirt that James the Elder had decided to retire from his wardrobe.  It worked great!  I had some old red grossgrain ribbon laying around that I used for the waist tie.  The pattern fit my waist great and it fits over the hoop skirt that I purchased on Ebay from Angel's Bridal Shop (keyword hoop skirt).  The hoop skirt looks good and fits good and the bumroll sits nicely on top of it.

May 9, 2005:  And so it begins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I purchased the bulk of the material for my Elizabethan yesterday!!!  I'm so excited to finally get started on this phase of the project.  So check back often as I enter into the true maddness of this project.  One important note:  for starters, I will be purchasing a hoop skirt because I don't want to take the time to make a farthingale  Perhaps I will at a later date, but I will be starting with a wedding variety hoop skirt.  In my mind, this will allow me more time to handsew eyelets for the bodice, sew on pearls, etc.

A Quick Costume for the Virginia Ren Fest.

We are planning on attending the VA Ren Fest the last weekend in May.  One slight problem...there is no way I'm going to have my Elizabethan dress done by then.  So, I'm going to make a "get by" dress for this fest.  I remembered that I have a green velvet dress in my closet that I wore years ago (10) to a wedding rehersal dinner.  I kept the dress because it has a great cut, great fabric and on occasion, we actually go to formal events in the DC area.  The biggest problem with the dress is that it is a size 2.  Um, not getting my post 2 baby body into a size 2!  So with some alteration, paneling, trim, etc...I can probably make it look somewhat like a German gown but without the heavely pleated skirt.  My goal is to completely transform the dress from its current design to resemble something that could possibaly be worn in 1565 by the end of May 2005.  Wish me luck!

Well I did not get this dress done by the VA Ren Fest.  We went in shorts and t-shirts instead....which was a good thing considering it turned out to be 85 degrees that day.  The faire was fun and has a lot of potential as it re-establishes itself in the new location.  The could have used a few more musical acts and some more tents to provide shaded seating.

May 11, 2005: The green velvet dress above is the basis for this quick German gown.  The dress has a nice cut and has almost an Italian look to it.  My plan is to actually wear the dress backwards so the back of the dress becomes the laced up front of the dress.  I've already detached the sleeves and cut them into three pieces each.  I'll sew trim around the pieces and connect them with ribbon.  The bust painting above is a good example of the color scheme I'm going to use.  Hopefully I can get everything done by the end of the month!

May 4, 2005: I purchased some golden rod colored shantung fabric for the "German" quick dress along with some navy blue ribbon for trimming.  This thing should be an interesting experiement.
