James the Elder's Concept

The Simplicity jerkin pattern is very close to the one from this painting of Lord Dudley. The apulet and peplum
of Jim's jerkin will look a lot like this when they are completed. The difference will be the sleeve attachment.

I found this painting long after I had purchased Jim's fabric. But it is amazing how close the color is to the
fabric I bought. The period in the painting is a little later than the date I'm going for in his costume, but the color
choices confirms that I made the right decision when I purchased the olive green fabric with burgundy trims.

Jim's pants have turned out the be nearly identical to the shape and look of the pants found in this painting.

After doing my research, I decided I really wanted to try
my hand at some blackwork embroidery on at least one of the costumes. I've always loved doing cross-stitch. I'll
post my Christmas stockings samples when the holidays roll around. So I decided that the cuffs and collar
of my husbands undershirt would be the perfect place for some blackwork. I've chosen the artichoke design which
is available on http://www.blackworkarchives.com/. The inspiration for the design was because my husband introduced
me to eating artichoke leaves, which I now love. (see pattern pic below)...also because I love the book, She Taught Me to Eat Artichokes illustrated by Paul Micich, who also played at our wedding and who bought a house that we rented for awhile. So we
have a deep connection to artichokes.
