Developing a Persona:

Well, after putting so much effort into our costumes, I've decided I need to start developing our family persona as well.  Check back often as I will start to post the history of our family circa 15--.  I've also created a draft family coat of arms that will be incorporated into our persona.  The coat of arms is based on known elements of both my husband and my family's coats.  See the new page for the current draft of the coat created in MS Paint.

The Beginnings

We had put off going to a Renaissance Festival for years...always saying we'd go once we had kids.  Well this fall we no longer had any excuse to put it off so away we went to the Maryland Ren Fest with our two little kids in tow.  We had such a great time that after a little bit of discussion on the ride home, we decided it would be so much more fun if we went in costume next year.

Years ago I had worked at a small festival doing a painting demonstration so I had a vague idea that there were patterns out there in the world for making period costumes. I had also worked at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC (www.shakespearedc.org) for several years so I was familiar with costuming, draping, and some of the fabric/trim vendors.  However, when I did a simple yahoo search on Elizabethan Costumes, I had NO idea that there was this whole world out there that is devoted to the art of Renaissance costuming.  I LOVE IT AND I'M HOOKED.  After spending several weeks doing research on patterns, materials, sewing techniques, etc. I have decided to launch full force into the world of Elizabethan/Tudor costume making.

Why Halfmoon Designs? - My maiden name was Moon and my older sister's friends used to call me Halfmoon so it just stuck.

Now those that know me, know that I'm not the kind of person that sticks a toe in the water...not me...no...I'm the kind of person that jumps in with both feet in the deep end on whatever I do.  I work full time, I have two little kids, and I consider myself a half-way decent triathlete...so being that I have a lot of spare time, I've decided to make costumes for my family to wear to the MD Ren Fest next year and hopefully we can find time to do some SCA events, too.

I invite you to join me in my adventure as I try to create upper class/noble costumes for my family.  This site will mainly contain photos and musings on the process.  I'd like to thank everyone out there in cyberspace for the wealth of information on Tudor/Elizabethan costuming and everyone that maintains their dress diaries and photo albums.  You have all been an amazing source of inspiration!  If you want to learn about my real life, other works, and interests stop by my webhome.
