Activity Explorer
Activity Explorer was born during my work on new Instant Collaboration
techniques in the context of the Reinventing Email projects in Cambridge. Activity Explorer is a novel hybrid productivity
component that combines informal, ad hoc communication with formal, more structured collaboration tools. The two key ingredients
of Activity Explorer are Live Shared Objects and Activities. The concept of an Activity as the organizing principle for work
provides horizontol tool integration. I've been working on this for more than three years now as the inventor and architect.
Activity Explorer went rapidly through several iterations from research prototype to product including a formal evaluation.
It is available today as part of the IBM Workplace product family. There are several publications on this topic and also a
quick summary on the web site of IBM Research in Cambridge.
TeamSpace
During my time as a Post Doc at IBM Research in New York, I was
working with Boeing and Georgia Institute of Technology on a system called TeamSpace that captures and provides access to distributed meetings. Unlike VCR-like recordings of
meetings, this system provides a fully indexed record of a meeting. The record is a visualized timeline of the meeting based
on user interactions with objects such as agendas, action items, presentations, and bookmarks. TeamSpace also includes a fully
J2EE based team work environment with document mangement. TeamSpace concepts have influenced the IBM Lotus Workplace product
family.
Digital Lecture Board
As part of my PhD thesis I designed and developed the digital lecture board.The digital lecture board is a novel, integrated teaching and learning tool which is basically an extended shared whiteboard
tailored to the needs of remote lecturing. In the context of my research work on the digital lecture board, I made several
significant contributions to the CSCW field reaching from consistency control to novel collaborative services. This work resulted
in multiple publications, a Best Paper Award in 1998, and of course a Ph.D. :) The successor of the digital lecture
board is known today as multimedia lecture board.
Media Stream Synchronization
As
part of my Master’s Thesis I developed a new synchronization scheme for multimedia streams originating from a set of
servers (called server array). I proposed a synchronization scheme for the delivery of stored media that achieves both, suitable
intra- and inter-stream synchronization. The scheme is receiver-based
and does not assume global clocks. Resynchronization is done by skipping/pausing, and furthermore, it uses the concept of
buffer level control. This work has been published at various conferences and won a Best Paper Award in 1996.
