1)  President's Message

Although fund raising is more difficult in the current economic climate, people understand that the needs of the less fortunate are now even greater.  It is through your efforts that we have been able to help those in the community who are in need.  Since October Kiwanis of Ocean Pines/Ocean City has raised about $3500 through the Pancake Breakfast (lead by Mary Lee Jansen), the Halloween Hot Dog Sales and German Dinner (lead by Barbara Peletier).  Thank all of you who helped!

Disbursements this month included contributions of food left over from the German Dinner to Diakonia and about $1550 in contributions to the Ocean Pines Recreation Center, the Children’s House by the Sea and Buckingham Elementary School.  The Buckingham contribution was from Al and Carol Kastner from funds they generated as Mr. and Mrs. Santa last year and donated in the name of Kiwanis this month to a very needy family whose child attends Buckingham Elementary School.  In addition $1000 was disbursed for Christmas presents and food for four families recommended by Worcester GOLD.  The Christmas presents and food (headed by Jim Spicknall) will be distributed just prior to Christmas.

The Blood Bank was also successful this month thanks to the leadership of Joe Bagdon and Pat Winkelmayer.  I will discuss the status of our ongoing routine projects next month.  For now let's enter the Holiday Season with a light heart and broad smile.  I hope to see you at the Holiday Party on December 9.

What One Kiwanian Can Do

From an article in the September Reader's Digest:  Kiwanian Mardy McGarry of Port Washington, Washington, wanted to build a playground for kids with special needs.  After talking with the kids in her special education class, she researched the design and cost of the project.  With the city council providing the land, the materials cost would be $450,000.  Her Kiwanis Club chapter provided startup of $7,000.  With support from the Club, contacts were made with local companies and foundations.  That and auctions, bake sales, t-shirt sales, etc. eventually raised the $450,000 to cover the cost of the materials.  The actual construction would cost $900,000 if done by a contractor.  McGarry needed 500 volunteers to do the construction.  A third of the town's population, 2,800 people, signed up to help.  The playground was completed in six days and was opened to the children in September 2008.
