Shake Yer Booty
Yesterday's Bat Mitzvah was awesome.  We first went to the temple to listen to some readings from the Torah.  Men wore yarmulke, women pinned a lacey fabric to the back of their hair.  Sophia actually sat through part of the readings for about ten minutes- the sound of Sophia chewing raisins was echoing throughout the temple.  Then it went downhill for us.  Phil took her out and stayed out.

After the service was done, we went to the basement to nosh and mingle.  There were bagels with butter and cream cheese on the table.  But first, the rabbi had a speech and a toast to the birthday girl and proceeded to cut the challah bread (yum!).  The cake came out and for each candle, she said a little poem and separately invited twelve special people in her life (or group) to help her light a candle on her cake.  It was very touching (or was my hormones kicking in again?  OY!).  Then the party started!

It was a brunch buffet theme- egg omelettes were made to your order, some pasta dishes, mini-pancakes, various wraps, cheese and crackers and crudite.  The dessert bar fared better- lots and lots of cookies (my favorite is the Linzer tart and the tricolor cookies) and brownies!  And ice cream with several toppings.  Mmm.  We didn't get a chance to try the cake- we were leaving when it was finally passed around.

Even though the music could have been better, it was catered to the 12-14 year old kids.  Normally I'm up there dancing, but in my condition, I sent Sophia to represent.  She didn't need any coaxing.  After she scarfed down her food, she booked out to the dance floor and partied by herself.  There is a song called the "Cha Cha Slide" that is very similiar to the "Electric Slide."  Sophia ACTUALLY followed the instructions that was called out and emulated everyone else.  It was hysterical (if anyone wants to see the video, I can send it to you- I don't know how to post it here).  Sophia was really the hit of the party.  Everyone kept coming up to us (we were the only Asian folks there, so you can't miss us) and told us how adorable she is.  What can I say?  She's got my genes (that's an uh oh for Phil).

We had to get home.  It was waaaaaaaaay past Sophia's naptime and with the time change, a big double whammy.   It was worse when I had to force her to wake up.  She threw a huge tantrum AND cried non-stop (she almost never cries) after she accidentally tinkled in her undies.

What a fun packed weekend.  Glad it's over with!

PS- Watching Grey's Anatomy and being pregnant is a bad combo.  For the past couple of weeks it had me tears!!!!!!!!!  Wah!

Fall Backward
When I was childless and carefree (yet married), Daylight Savings Time was like a huge treat.  It meant, bars stayed open a little longer and I got to sleep in an extra hour (not that I ever slept long).  Now that I have a child, I hate losing that extra hour.  It means I am up at an ungodly hour now- instead of the usual 8a-8:30a, it's now an hour early.  It totally fucks up our morning schedule (okay, really MY schedule).  The only pro is, she goes to bed early and I'm left to twiddle my thumbs.  Now that baseball is officially over, I REALLY have nothing to watch on tv (with the exception of Grey's Anatomy and Laguna Beach).  I better get back into the grind of reading or Netflixing.

Is it January yet or what?

More on DM/Halloween
I remembered a few more things from last night's show:

  • Another famous sighting- Seymour Stein- he's chairman of Sire Records (home of DM in Europe).  Known for signing big-time artists such as Talking Heads, the Ramones, Madonna and the Pretenders and responsible for signing many '80s new wave bands.  I am in awe of this man.
  • A middle-aged guy (then again, practically everyone there was middle-aged) was standing outside, holding up a poster he made, begging for one ticket.  Fifteen minutes after Mark and I got in, he was seen running around the hall with his sign.  Everyone cheered for him because someone gave him a break (I heard the owner of Bowery Ballroom let him in)!
  • I was the only crazy, pregnant woman dancing at the show.
  • Although I brought my handy earplugs (hey, if you're in the music industry and attend many shows, ya gotta have earplugs), I didn't use it.  My ears didn't ring after the show though my voice was extremely hoarse from screaming.

Today, we headed to the World Financial Center for a kiddie Halloween party.  Sophia was dressed as last year's costume- a bumble bee (it was too cold to wear her tutu).  She trick o' treated around the stores and scored some good treats.  She knows she's not allowed to eat candies, so we divvied up her candies and gave half to my sister Kim and half to the nanny, Phil and me.  She kept the non-bouncing off the wall candies- pretzels, Welsh's fruit snacks and a madeline (a french cookie).  Everyone loved her costume.  One lady who was giving out treats, gave her extra because she thought Sophia was hella cute!

We didn't bother taking a photo or having her face painted at the WFC.  It was way past Sophia's lunch (and mine), so Phil suggested we hit Applebee's, which is located across the street.  I suggested Cosi's (it was already inside the WFC).  Should have stuck with my idea.  Food at Applebee's was AWFUL (Sophia and I shared the appetizer sampler and Phil had a cheeseburger).  Salty as heck!  I ended up with a massive headache when I got home.

Tomorrow we're off to a Bat Mitzvah.  I'm super excited as it's my first time attending one (I know, how odd considering I have many Jewish friends).   We'll see how this goes.

I LOVE DM
Oh my gawd.  OH MY GAWD.  OH MY GAWD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think I've EVER been to DM's concert where I was thisclose to touching them.  Infact, when my friend Mark (my hookup) and I walked in, we almost bumped into them as they were rushing to get to their dressing room.  They looked at us as if they were deers caught in headlights.  I refrained from slobbering them (eww, not Fletch) since I wanted to see their performance.

The show was fan-fucking-tastic.  Dave, sang wonderfully and always knows how to lure the crowd in (though he needs to stop the "oh yeahs").  Martin was strumming the guitar for most of the time, until he gives Dave a break and throws in his two song set.  Fletch, the least of my favorite (rumors have been said he and Alan Wilder, my personal fav, the fourth member who left after SOFAD [Songs of Faith and Devotion], never really got a long), looking awkward while plonking his pudgy fingers on the keyboard, waving those lanky arms and clapping offbeat as usual (dork).

The stage was definitely not big enough for Dave to do his usual marathon running from the left to right stage.   Also, there were several times where I thought he was going to hit the drummer when he lifted the mic stand and twirl it around like a baton.   From what I saw, DM brought in additional speakers, making the sound more kickass.

They played a variety of songs from their new album, "Playing the Angel."  If memory serves me right (and lately it hasn't), they played- Question of Time, Policy of Truth, I Feel You, Home, The World In My Eyes, Never Let Me Down Again, Behind The Wheel, Personal Jesus, Walking In My Shoes and encore, Enjoy the Silence.  Talk about reliving your youth from these songs.  Wow.

I bumped into an ex-colleague there who works for the label and was kind enough to invite me to the after-show, but I declined (I know, what a fool, my big chance to shake my idols hands).  I knew I would be too knackered to hang (rather, drool).  Oh well.  It's probably better off I didn't.  Last time I went to an after-show, it was for Duran Duran and there were things I shouldn't have seen.  How I perceive them now, totally bums me out.

Oh yeah, Moby was in the house too.  I've seen him several times before in person since he was on the Elektra label years ago, but yes, he is super short in person.

When I got home, poor Sophia was in bed, but still awake (it was past 11p!).   She asked, "Where Mommy go" and all I could explain was that Mommy had gone to see Mommy's friends.  I guess she wasn't used to Phil putting her to bed (I always put her in her crib and say goodnight to her).  So I guess she waited for me...aww.

Anyhows, all I can say is, my feet hurts like a motherfucker, but hot damn, for DM, I'll take the pain for them anytime.

The Bestest
My ex-colleague/friend, Mark, is the bestest.  I'll tell you why come Friday when it's confirmed.  I just had to say it aloud.
4:48 pm

No Apologies
Does one make an apology for something they weren't aware it was a surprise?  All I did was e-mail my cousin to tell her we weren't able to make it to her shower this past weekend.  Instead, I spilled the beans.  It annoyed her sister (my other cousin) who organized the party.  I'm a bit annoyed because she's annoyed.  Technically, I didn't fuck it up.  There was no mention in any of her e-mails that it was a SURPRISE.

If the organizer is sending a mass e-mail about a party being a surprise,  the cardinal rule to doing so includes the word "surprise" in CAPS and in BOLD and UNDERLINE and repeatedly mention in the e-mail and subject that it's a SURPRISE SURPRISE SURPRISE and not to say anything to make sure one doesn't tip the soon-to-be surprised person off.

I'm tired of apologizing for the sake of apologizing.  I'm tired of being the nice one.  Don't get me wrong, I love my cousins.  But you know what, fuck that, I'm not making any apologies for something that wasn't brought to my attention.

Apple cake anyone?

I Miss...
Things I miss doing ever since I got pregnant-

  1. Sleeping on my stomach.
  2. Sleeping through the night.
  3. Eating whatever I want.
  4. Jogging/exercising.
  5. Drinking like a lush.
  6. Wearing tight jeans that make my bum look round.
  7. Having a cup of tea (with PG Tips, of course).
  8. Hugging Sophia properly.
  9. Waltzing with Sophia.
  10. Having a seat on the train WHEN I want it, not because I'm pregnant (this is an entirely different topic).
  11. Seatbelts that fit properly.
  12. Scratching because my body itches, not when my body isn't stretched into gazillions of different directions.
  13. Not wearing oversized grandma undies.
  14. Not having to force myself to eat three million different kinds of vitamins (right now I'm taking a pre-natal multi-vitamin, iron pills AND calcium chews).

Gee, I hope I didn't dissuade any future mommies out there.

Apple Me
We were supposed to go visit Phil's sister and family in Maryland and attend my cousin Kelly's baby shower in DC for the weekend, but couldn't go because of conflict in Phil's work schedule.  Instead, we planned on hitting an apple orchard in New Jersey.  I checked the weather this morning and it looked like rain south of us, so I decided we go north where the sun was shining.

We took an hour and a half drive to Barton Orchards in Poughquag.  It was definitely a beautiful drive- the sun shone and fall foliage was beginning to peak in Dutchess county.  The air was crisp and fresh as breathed in the non-polluted air.  We tripped over many fallen apples on the ground since it was near the end of the apple picking season.  We managed to pick ten pounds of MacIntosh and Fuji apples ($7 worth).  The big pisser was THEY RAN OUT OF APPLE CIDER DONUTS.  What the fuck!!!!!  Can you imagine the headlines- Pregnant Asian Woman Demands Store Clerks at Gunpoint for Donuts.  The store clerk thought Dunkin Donuts would be a great second choice.  What a dumbass.  We had to settle for cider.  Sonofabitch.

On our way back home, I had to tinkle, so I suggested we hit Stew Leonard's.  I've always wanted to check out this supermarket but never seem to go in that direction.  OH MY GAWD.  It is an amazing supermarket.  You could easily have dinner there with so many samples to choose from (the NE Clam Chowder was great).  Sophia, who easily loses patience sitting on the cart, LOVED THE STORE.  There was so many distractions- animals making noises, a singing tree, a singing banana Chiquita lady, a train running around the cash register, etc.  She was thoroughly entertained.  Phil and I were too.  We ended up buying apple cider donuts (hmpf, not as great as having fresh ones at the orchards, but it will do), fried chicken, corn fritters (or corn poppers- I LOVE THEM), mini-muffins, potatoes, guacamole, salsa, chips, gouda cheese, crackers and baguette.  The cash register clerk even gave Sophia a sticker.  Talk about service.  They really cater to families with kids.  They really need to build one in Manhattan.

Massagy
It's SpaWeek in NYC and I treated myself to a full body, prenatal massage today.  I was looking forward to laying face down on the massage table, but unfortunately they didn't have it.  Instead, I had to prop myself on my sides with cushions for my head, shoulders and legs.  It didn't matter, I was looking forward to getting a massage.

When the therapist massaged my back, I automatically jumped.  I am extremely ticklish on my mid-back.  The therapist said I could have been constantly tickled when I was young and became very sensitive back there.  The trick was to inhale and exhale deeply and the sensitive area will temporarily dissipate.  The massage was so relaxing, I think at one point, I caught myself snoring although the therapist said she didn't hear a peep from me.  I plan to see her once more in my last trimester (pending on the weather since I'm due in January).

After being goaded by Phil and my father, I reluctantly told my boss about my extremely generous first paycheck and had them look into the error.  I wasn't just paid a few extra dollars.  It was more like, a few thousand!  The women in payroll was so shocked and surprised I was honest about their mistake.  I did tell them the next time it happens, I'm not reporting it (I was half kidding, I think?).  Just when I was thinking about buying Sophia some new toys and fixing up the house.

Punish
I had to punish Sophia tonight for not finishing her dinner, which translates, she couldn't watch Blues Clues.  She knew I was pissed at her for being bad and actually turned down an ice cream offer (okay, I felt bad for eating ice cream in front of her).  So I gave her milk and her favorite cookies for dessert, Stella D'Oro, assorted cookies (the chocolate ones with rainbow sprinkles...I do let her indulge in something bad!).  Since we needed noise as backdrop, I let her choose any music she wanted to listen to.  She chose a compilation of children's songs in instrumental music and They Might Be Giants, Here Come the A, B, Cs (a highly recommended cd for kids!  Her favorite song is Q, U).  I'm surprised she hasn't once asked me to turn the tv on.  Maybe she's actually reflecting on what she did wrong.  *snort*  When pigs fly.

Chug-a-lug
I wish I was chugging a nice, cold glass of Bass ale, but alas, my doctor orders are to chug a 10 oz. glucose drink.  It's kinda like drinking a Sunkist or Fanta soda, but much, MUCH sweeter.  I'm still shivering from the after effects and it's making me feel a bit woozy and nauseated (it's that sweet).  I'm trying to keep my mind straight by thinking about my lunch- FALAFEL sammich.  Mmm.

This gestational diabetes test is normally done between 24 to 28 weeks of pregnancy.  Basically, they're checking to see if a high blood sugar count will show up on the tests.  A very small percentage of pregnant women get it, so I'm not worried about this, unlike the amniocentisis.  But it means I will get poked in the arm (I absolutely hate needles) for blood sample.

More later, when I return.

A lesson to be learned- after chugging the glucose drink, you MUST be in the office within the hour so they can take your blood immediately!  I was a half hour late, so I have to go back next Monday to do it over.  UUUUUUUUUUUUUGH.

I'm at week 25.  I gained only two pounds within the month, so I'm pretty lightweight (a little over ten pounds, I think?).  At the rate I'm going, this kiddo is gonna weigh less than Sophia (she was exactly 7lbs).  Doc says I have to start taking an additional pill- IRON.  Naaaaaasty.  I just can't wait to see the color of my poo (sorry, too much info).

Birthday Party
We all headed out to Queens to celebrate Justin's fifth birthday today.  Had a great time, including Phil and I.  While Sophia and the boys (Justin, Drew and Troy) played with each other, the parents had an actual conversation.  Pizza, Carvel's (Mommy's favorite!) and cookies were on the menu.  I was known as "militant mom" for not giving her juice on a normal basis (juice is given as treats or when we're outdoors) and for not giving her chocolate cookies (only as dessert and when she's good).  Haha, whatever!  Unfortunately, Sophia missed her naptime, fell asleep in the car for only 20 minutes and got extremely cranky and belligerent when we got home (she wouldn't go back to sleep on the bed).  It was indeed a long day for her...and me.

I just got paid from my job, but check this out- they overpaid me.  Not just by a few hundred, a few thousand.  Phil tells me not to cash it.  I said, I'm cashing it 'cuz it's not my fault.  I'll repay when they  notice it!  Suckas.

Well, we're off to my parents for dinner.  I really can't handle anymore chink food.  Barf.

And on the Eighth Day...
It rains once more.
5:01 pm

Thursday, October 13, 2005

It's been raining almost non-stop for the past couple of days.  Generally I don't mind, but it's stopping me from running my errands.  All Sophia could do is stare outside the window singing, "Rain Rain Go Away..."

I spent the entire morning clearing out Phil's and my summer clothes to winter clothes.  I don't know why I am bothering to switch since I won't be able to wear most of my winter apparel by the time baby is born (I will be wearing my maternity clothes for at least six weeks).   Next thing I'll notice is that it's springtime and I'll have to yank out all the Rubbermaid boxes once again.

My parents were in good spirits last night despite of the long flight.  My father was ever so eager to tell us a story with each photo he or my mother took.  My mother went on a shopping spree and brought back a whole new suitcase of clothes for Sophia.  I requested nothing from them except for soap from the hotel (I am sooo ghetto, but I love "stealing" hotel soap for the bathroom and kitchen).  My mother was nice enough to buy all the girls jade bracelets.  I am definitely not a dainty woman- I could break the bracelet easily.

Anyhows, I'm off to launder our clothes...

Land of Far & Bento
My parents are on their way back home, spending a healthy amount of time in the land of apparel knock-offs, rice and seafood.  Right now, I'm tracking their flight from the airline site.  Gotta love technology.  Too bad I can't go pick them up at the airport and surprise them with Sophia's smiling face.  It's raining cats and dogs for the past few hours so it's probably not a good idea for a pregger, psycho driver like me to get on the road.

Like PastryMom, I have been addicted to this BentoBox blog site.  This woman is amazing- she's a working mom with mega degrees and manages to pack really cute bento box lunches for her two children.  I wonder, will I have the patience to do the same for Sophia and baby number two when they head off to school?  I have to admit my cooking skills are pretty nil (hence why I have the nanny cook us dinner and we can always head over to our parents house for dinner), but shit, how difficult is it to put together diced raw veggies and fruits, sandwiches, seaweed rolls, soba noodles in a bento box?  It's gotta be easy, right?  Or should I just let the kids suffer and eat the crappy food they serve at school?  Ugh, I guess I'll make that decision when I get there.

Last night, Sophia did NOT wake up to yell at me to COVER HER.  Hallelujah!  In addition to her usual baby blanket, I gave her a small fleece blankie to cover her.  Maybe all this time she was trying to tell me she was cold (I can't tell what's cold or warm for anyone but me these days, the bun in the oven is keeping me very warm).  We'll see how that fares tonight.

Sad, Sad Day
I generally don't post about the Yankees, so pardon the post if you don't care about baseball.  An absolute heartbreaking Yankee series (against the Anaheim, I mean, LA Angels).  So much for our 1-2-3 punch with A-Rod, Sheff and Matsui.  WHERE WERE THEY!  They all put up great numbers at the end of the season, but postseason comes, they just simply never showed up.  Lot of changes on the roster for next year- goodbye to our beloved coach Joe Torre, Mel Stottlemyre, Joe Girardi and veteran Bernie.  Perhaps Mattingly and Moose will be gone as well.  Good fucking riddance to Kevin Brown and Jared Wright- useless, broken bitches.  Welcome back, Sweet Lou.  Will he be compared to the days of tempermental Billy Martin?  Nothing like riling up the Bronx Zoo.  Should be interesting to see come next March.

I don't know what I'm going to watch at nights now the Yanks have been eliminated, although Larry Brown and the Knicks could temporarily fill the void until spring training (doubt it, but it's worth a try).

Now, back to our regular program on the life of Sophia.

Blue, Spanish, Cover Me
Why does Blue (from Blues Clues) not speak, but bark like a dog when all of his friends/characters (Magenta the pink dog, Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper, Mailbox, Slippery Soap, et al) can speak coherently?  It annoys the hell out of Phil.

Anyhows, thanks to Dora, Sophia was heard counting 1-5 in spanish at a grocery store.  You know what she was counting?  Candy, of course.

Lately, Sophia's been waking up in the middle of the night, calling for me.  In the beginning I was ignoring her (as usual) and she'd fall back asleep without having me go to her.  By the fourth or fifth night, she was persistent about getting my attention.  I was so pissed at her, I would often shout from my bed and ask what the hell she wanted.  You know what it was?  She wanted me to COVER HER with the blanket.  You know I was fuming.  I shout back to her that she should do it herself.  I refuse to be taken advantage of.  (She ends up going back to sleep, sniffling.)  I'm not being a mean mommy.  Point is, you let them think it's okay and they'll just run ya over like a truck.  I will not be reckoned with!

I Can Spell
This afternoon, Sophia and I were coloring and drawing with crayons.  She knows her alphabet pretty well, but I wanted to see if she knew what I was writing.  As I wrote "S", Sophia says the letter aloud.  I wrote "O" and she says, "P" then "H."  I was shocked she knew what letter followed in her name!  She forgot the "I" but got the "A."  I was in awe.  My baby can almost spell her name aloud!

Martha, Martha, Martha
I just got back from a taping of the Martha Stewart live show.  Last week, when I attended the Whole Foods lecture, someone gave out a flyer for pregnant women to call and sign up for the show.  Today's show was baby themed, which mother-to-be Jennifer Garner guested.  There were about 130+ audience members who stood in line outside studio around 8:30a.  Inside, security checked bags and we were given a questionaire sheet to fill out.  They offered various muffins and Vitamin Water drinks for us hungry pregnant women, which was a nice touch.

By the time I got there (late as usual), it seemed everyone was chummy chummy with each other, so I had no one to share my  excitement.  It didn't matter- in a short time, we were ushered inside the taping studio in a very efficient and timely matter.  The studio was full of bright lights pointing in every angle.  Several flat screened tv's for audience members to watch.  A real kitchen that was closed off but huge glass windows you can peek inside.  A prop kitchen for Martha and her guest to show audience members and viewers how to cook and bake.

Since I was practically one of the last ones who showed up late, I was surprised that I was seated in the front row of the tiers.  They  seated about 20-30 nine-month termed pregnant women on the floor area.  I guess if you're gonna be on Martha's show, ya gotta play and look the part.  One of the women was actually due today.  Not to panic- there were two EMT's and a doctor on standby JUST INCASE someone had to deliver on the spot.  I'd be mortified if my water broke on the show!

We were quickly coached on clapping our hands and cheering loudly and to stop.  Jennifer Garner, cute as a button, was funny at times.  Eric Ripert, the chef for Le Bernadin, quickly showed us how easy it is to make our own baby food (as if we had time, that's what ready made jars are for!).  They showed us how to make cute baby announcements (did you know stamp prices will be raised in January to .39 cents?).  The real special guests were sextuplets AND twins.  Yes, you read that right.  Eight kids in total.  I really don't know how these parents do it.

The taping went by quite fast.  At the end, Martha thanked us for being particpants and in return, we received some goodies.  Not only were they nice, they were FANTASTIC (see below for goody bag). What a treat!
