To Fedor Ouspensky

Why Fedor deserves a high five: On Sunday he'll play a violin solo with the McLean Youth Orchestra. The orchestra's director, Tina Anderson, says he's the youngest soloist she can ever remember performing with the orchestra. Fedor is 7 years old.

How long have you been playing the violin? "For two years. I think I decided that I wanted to learn to play. I picked the violin because when you go from the violin to the other instruments, [the other instruments] are easy to play."

Would you like to play other instruments? "Yes, but not until I know the violin. I'd like to play the guitar, electric guitar, drum sets and all stuff like that."

What's your favorite thing to play? "My favorite piece to play is Accolay Violin Concerto." (That's what he is playing Sunday.)

How much do you practice each day? "About one hour. Sometimes a lot more, or sometimes I just practice 45 minutes. I practice with my grandma. She plays the violin. I think she's very good."

Do you like practicing? "No."

What do you like to do besides play violin? "I know some Chinese. I write a lot of Chinese characters. Sometimes I play a little bit of soccer, but I don't play many sports. I don't want to do anything to break my hands because then I couldn't go in concerts. I like swimming."

Best subject in school: Math.

What would you like to be when you grow up? "I want to be a violinist and a conductor. I also want to be a pianist and an engineer."

Family: Fedor lives in Reston with his mom, Anna Ouspenskaya; his dad, Igor Zubkovsky; and his grandmothers.

See Fedor play: The McLean Youth Orchestra will perform at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Richard J. Ernst Community Cultural Center, Northern Virginia Community College, in Annandale. Free admission.
