August 26th Micro Update

I finally finished the double bottom and have applied a layer of 4 oz glass set in epoxy over it.  It is amazing how that thin layer of epoxy and glass really stiffens up the bottom.  The keel batten has been cut and fit with three galvanized bolts as I am waiting for my shipment of bronze bolts and screws to arrive.

I cut the batten from a clear 2X6 and saved the rest for upper gunwale logs, etc. . .

I then outlined the batten with pencil and will predrill all of the screw holes from the outside first (between the pencil lines) and then will drill and countersink into the batten.  Then all will be glued and screwed.  There is no way that the keel could fall off of this structure without the boat ripping apart.  It will be incredibly strong once all is done.

I am keeping the other keel "skids" as well, as they will do no harm and will provide a bit more protection in a grounding.  They also will stiffen the bottom up some.  They are very easy to apply so there is no reason to leave them out.

I did double check the keel curve again with my keel template.  Do not throw out the template that came out of the mold it is used to check the curvature, and for fitting the sheathing prior to flipping the boat and installing the keel.
