Diegem Super Prestige

December 24, 2005

The UCI rules specifies "wooden stakes" as opposed the plastic sticks we see most often in the northeast. At this race, in the grassy or dirt areas, they used wooden stakes that are round and about three inches in diameter. They have a sledge hammer that if we were in Norway would be called "Thor’s Hammer" to pound these stakes into the ground. Between the stakes, both plastic tape and rope was used to form a barrier.

The plastic tape was white and featured the name of the key sponsor of the Super Prestige series, "Karcher", who I think makes hardware, like Black and Decker. The high pressure washers in the pits were made by this company. The plastic tape was tied off about a third way down the stake. Another third way down, a red rope was used, with width of about 3/8th of an inch. The whole affair is very visible to spectators and riders alike.

On the road sections as mentioned before, universally the organization used steel barricades. In areas on the grassy zones that would be spectator heavy, like the plank barrier section, they also lined the zone with steel barricades. Needless to say, the signage for television was extensive around the course.
