When we buy a collection or a train set, we appraise the pieces as we normally do, and then come up with a purchase
price. Typically a dealer, or a collector, will offer from 50%-65% of the
market value determined by the appraisal. Collectors may offer higher prices for collections in "Like New" or "Mint"
condition.
We have found that many people feel like they have old Lionel train sets that are worth thousands of dollars. While this may be true in some cases, most of the train sets that we see were produced
in volume and have little or no collector value.
For example, a boxed 1954 Lionel Set No. 1500 (1130 engine, 6066T tender, 6032
gondola, 6034 Baby Ruth box car, and a 6037 caboose) in "Excellent" condition has a market value of about $150.00.
"Boxed" means that it includes the original set box and all the individual boxes for the engine, tender, and rolling
stock.
On the other hand, a boxed 2234W Santa Fe F-3 Super Streamliner set in "Excellent" condition has a market value of
about $3000.00. A dealer or collector would probably pay $75.00 and $1,500.00
or more, respectively, for these sets.

firm offer.
