Summer,
1949. At the corner of Marion and Eutaw
Streets,
East Boston, Massachusetts, where the
electric
wire broke. Nice photo of an old Boston
Police
car.
Chevy had that
same basic style through 1952.
Both cruisers
are Chevy’s, the one in back could be a
1947 or 1948.
The wagon looks like a 1940's era
Dodge, with
those headlights mounted on the front
fenders.
Interesting
to note, that none of these vehicles
seem to be
equipped with a visible siren and/ or
warning light.
Also noteworthy, is the cruiser in the background, which has the BOSTON POLICE
lettering on
the back doors instead of the front, as
the front fenders
were extended back to the front
doors during
those model years.

The photos are from the
mid '50's, and the bikes, all
Harleys, of course, were
painted silver with blue
Scotchlite lettering. Note,
that none of the motor
cops has a helmet, as they
were not mandated back
then. Also, there were no
saddlebags, very little
chrome, and no rear emergency
flashers.

The group picture
was taken in the mid-50’sThese
trucks were
used by the fleet maintenance section,
and were painted
dark blue with white Scotchlite
lettering.

The rear view
of the wagon was taken during the same
era. Black
and yellow visibility stripes on rear, and
no rear door. Wonder how many prisoners they lost.

Next up is
the driver's side view of a 1960 Ford F-100
wagon. I think
this was the first year the city
ordered them
painted white with blue Scotchlite
letting and
a revolving "gumball light on the roof,
with a split dome - blue in front, red in the rear.

I thought that you may
enjoy a few
police vehicle shots which I took as a kid in the
60's.
One shot of an MDC
wagon, the rest are Boston. Both departments still did
ambulance runs when
these shots were taken. Station wagons were called
"ambulettes". Both wagons
and ambulettes carried "Collapsi-cot" stretchers
in the back, and my hats
off to all the "wagon-men" of the day who
answered ambulance run calls as
well as regular radio calls for a whopping $150 per
week !
