Johannes Finger, born about 1700 in Palatinate, Germany
Johannes Vinger, or Finger, came to America about 1710 from the Palatinate region of Germany. The region is call
Pfalz, or Rhein-Pfalz, in Germany. He married Cattarina Hess in 1725 in Columbia, New York. (See www.fingerfamily.com)
The letter V is pronounced like F in German. Thus the name "Vinger" is pronounced "Finger". Even though some
of the oldest documents of Johannes may have spelled his name "Vinger", all of his many descendants in America have always
used the spelling "Finger" or "Fingar".
The DNA Haplogroup of Johannes Finger is I1a. This is a different Haplogroup from Samuel Finger, who is R1b.
This means that Johannes and Samuel are not close cousins, nor even distant cousins, but only related by a common paternal
ancestor many thousands of years ago.
This was something of a surprise. I had expected Johannes and Samuel to be related within the last thousand
years. I had assumed that they both derived from the same Finger ancestor, but I was wrong.
In this case, the name Finger has been adopted by these two families independently of each other. It is analogous
to two different families adopting the name Smith about a thousand years ago. It happens.
