New London Academy
![]() Billy and Andy go to school here at New London Academy. It is the oldest continuously - operating school in the entire Commonwealth of Virginia. It first opened in 1795, only a few miles from Thomas Jefferson's summer retreat home, Poplar Forest. In fact, some of Jefferson's grandchildren went to school here. The school has been open every single year since; even during the Civil War. The original building is no longer standing. The building you see in this picture is the original cook house for the school. It was built in 1797 and now serves as a museum. There is another building currently in use on the property that was built in the 1800's. It was renovated in the 1980's and is used for offices, resource rooms and art classrooms. The general classrooms and main office are in the newest buildings and have all the modern comforts and conveniences we are used to! ![]() After school, Mommy and Carrie wait for the boys to come home. We can see their bus coming from way across the fields. |
