The Handbook of Riding Essentials I like this book for its straightforward style, clear line diagrams and consise definitions.  The information is easily accessable, covers beginning and more advanced work, and makes an excellent reference for some of the more complex books out there.

Basic Equitation aka Start riding right (published under different titles)  While not Licart's best book, he is an important author in the French Tradition.  This book covers "the first 10 lessons" as defined by the author.  These are good, solid lessons and he covers the basics well, including seat work.  Though out of print, this book is usually widely availible and inexpensive on the used market and is therefor ranks a must read.

Horse training: Out-door and high school, This is a fabulous book, a must read.  The author writes so well and the photographs are amazing.  This Author was a genius with the horse and the pen, and he really makes things clear and easy to understand.  This book is availible through Second Story Books.
