Robotics Competition/Exhibition - General Info

There are several robotic competitions in the area that we have the option of participating in. The largest one in the northeast is the competitions sponsored by FIRST, which stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology". FIRST is a multinational non-profit organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today. FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, the inventor of the Segway Human Transporter, and based in New Hampshire. The mission of FIRST is to design accessible, innovative programs that build self-confidence, knowledge and life skills while motivating young people to pursue opportunities in science, technology and engineering. The First Lego League (FLL) is a competition for students age 9-14 (4th-9th grade), considered the "little league" of the FIRST Robotics Competition, and is the result of a partnership between FIRST and The LEGO Company. The rules are released in September, and the regional games take place from November-January.

Each year the First Lego League competition is based on a real-world problem and incorporates hands-on experimentation. With the help of the LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System, young participants can build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style robotics event specially designed for their age group. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions.

Robofest is another exciting robotics competition and exhibition that is based at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan. This competition takes place in May and the rules are released in December or January. They have many sites around the world where the competitions take place, with one in Nashua, New Hampshire. Robofest is a computerized robotics contest in which 5th - 12th grade (a junior division for 5-9th) students design, construct and program their robots while learning problem-solving techniques, mathematics, logic, creativity, physics, electronics, mechanics, teamwork, computers and computer programming.
