First Lego League
The First Lego League (FLL) is a robotics competition and project presentation designed for students age 9-14 (4th-9th grade), and is considered the "little league" of the FIRST Robotics Competition. FLL is the result of a partnership between FIRST, "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology", and The LEGO Company. FIRST is a multinational non-profit organization, that aspires to transform culture, making science, math, engineering, and technology as cool for kids as sports are today.
The official FLL rules are released in September, and the regional games take place from November-January. Qualifying teams are invited to the international competition, which usually occurs in April in the state of Georgia. Each year the First Lego League competition is based on a real-world problem and incorporates hands-on experimentation with solving a team determined problem based on the year's theme. In 2005 the theme was Ocean Odyssey and this was our initial year doing the competition. The FLL team consisted of 4 students, two 4th graders and two 5th graders from the Easton Public Schools.
The rules require that each team use a LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Kit LEGO RCX or the new LEGO NXT as the brains for the robot, and can use either the LEGO RIS or NXT software or RoboLab software to program the robot. The participants will build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style robotics event specially designed for their age group. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions.
