FLL 2005 - Ocean Robotics Aquatic Team (ORATs)
This was our first year participating in a First Lego League (FLL) competition. The theme this year was Ocean Odyssey, and were were able to compete in the robotics only 6th annual Blackstone Valley FIRST Lego Competition at the Blackstone Valley Regional High School in Upton, MA. The team name was the Ocean Robotics Aquatic Team (Ocean R.A.T.s for short) and was made up of for team members two 4th and two in 5th grade at Easron's H.H. Richardson and F.L. Olmstead schools. The team did exceedingly well, making it to the final 16 teams in the elimination rounds, getting there best score of 143 out of the 8 rounds they did. More than 60 teams participated in this tournament. This is the first year that these four have been brought together as a team to meet the FLL challenge. And it is also the first year for coaches Steve Brady and Matthew Cioffi.

The Ocean Odyssey missions included:
| Preventing pollution cargo | ||
| Recovering valuables | ||
| Locating a sunken ship | ||
| Free a dolphin | ||
| Fix a pipeline | ||
| Select one fish among many | ||
| Placing an artificial reef | ||
The team members have had lots of fun trying to solve these problems and accomplish the missions of the Ocean Odyssey challenge and have learned a lot about gear ratios, programming, and the design process. In the Blackstone competition they learned how to adapt to the situations as it occurred and as a team the produced better results than any of the practice sessions. They did a great job and we will continue to meet periodically over the next year.
