Suggested Packing List

 

Basics:

Backpack external frame

Sleeping bag (rated 20F-30F)

Tent (scouts share tent.  1 takes tent, 2nd takes poles and ground cloth)

Sleeping pad (foam or Thermarest)

(2) pairs of 30-36” ties down straps for attaching tent, sleeping bag, and other items to pack

(1) backpack rain cover if no poncho

 

Eating and Drinking

Water bottles (at least two 1-liter bottles)

Cook kit (cup, dish, bowl, spoon, knife, fork, pot and cover for heating water

Stove (small camp stove with (1) extra fuel canister or extra fuel) (Scouts may share)

Matches in waterproof container

Utility knife (pocketknife, Swiss Army knife, or Leatherman tool)

 

Clothing

Hiking Boots (well broken in)

I pair hiking pants or jeans (wear one, bring a second)

3 pair socks (No cotton!  Wool or synthetic.  Liners are optional)

1 pair long underwear (No cotton! Wool or synthetic.)

(2) thermal tops (No cotton! Wool or synthetic.)

(1) Fleece sweater or jacket (pullover)

(2) Underwear

(1) T-shirt (Synthetic preferred (UnderArmor, etc))

(1) Wool or fleece hat (Great for sleeping in cold weather)

(1) Pair gloves

(1) Bandanna

(1) Poncho or rain suit (top and pants). Rain pants are very valuable, even if you have a poncho.

(1) Outer jacket or windbreaker (depends on lowest minimum expected temperature)

(1) Ball cap or hiking hat

 

Other:

Walking stick

Length of paracord (lightweight cord for lashing/repairs

Small first aid kit, with ace bandage. 

Whistle

Compass

Small notebook and pencil/pen

½ roll Toilet paper in Zip Lok bag

Small camp towel

Flashlight (LED type, headlamps work GREAT!)

Suncreen/lip balm

Toothpaste /toothbrush)

Hand sanitizer

Extra quart and gallon Zip Lok bags

Tip: Pack clothes in plastic trash bags to keep dry in wet weather

Camera (keep in Zip Lok bag)

 

Food:

Snacks: (Energy bars, “gorp”, dried fruit, beef jerky, cookies)

Lunch: Sandwich, juice box, fruit (apple, bananna, etc)

Dinner: Freeze dried camping food, “instant” noodles, snacks, powered energy drink,  hot chocolate, Tang, ice tea mix)

Breakfast: Instant oatmeal, cold cereal, tea, hot chocolate, cereal bars, etc.
