Curriculum Benchmarks for SLRMS

 

By the End of Grade 8, the student will:

 

Learning Standard 1:  Methods, Materials, and Techniques

*     - Explore new 2D and 3D art processes, techniques, and materials with a focus on exploring the effects possible within each medium, such as: 2D – crosshatching, stippling, blending, wash effects;  printmaking  effects; 3D – mobile and stabile forms, carved,  and constructed forms.

*     - Create artwork that demonstrates awareness of the range and purpose of tools such as pens, brushes, colored pencils, printmaking tools, sculpting tools, and computers.

*   -   Use the appropriate vocabulary related to the methods, materials, and techniques used in grades Pre-K – 8.

*     - Maintain the workspace, materials, and tools responsibly and safely.

 

 Learning Standard 2: Elements and Principles of Design

      -Create a color wheel using primary and secondary colors.

*      -Use and describe the terms: hue, value, shade, tint,  complementary colors, analogous colors, and monochromatic colors.

*     -Create a tinted or shaded value scale project.

*     - Identify and use several types of line in an original artwork.

*   -   Use and be able to differentiate between actual surface texture and the illusion of texture.

*   -   Be able to identify basic geometric shapes.

*    -  Differentiate between positive and negative space.

*    -  Create unified 2D and 3D compositions that demonstrate a developing understanding of balance, repetition, rhythm, scale, proportion, unity, harmony, and emphasis.

*    -  Begin to develop 2D compositions that give the illusion of 3D space and volume.

*    -  Maintain an art notebook of class notes, sketches, vocabulary terms, and exercises involving the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design.

 

 

  Learning Standard 3: Observation, Abstraction, Invention, and Expression

*      -Start to develop skills of perception, discrimination, physical coordination, and memory of detail necessary to create realistic 2D and 3D representational artwork from direct observation.

*     - Create symbolic artwork by substituting symbols for objects, relationships, and ideas.

*      -Experiment in creating lines and imagery that demonstrate personal ideas and emotions.

*      - Explain the ways in which architects, craftsmen, and designers develop designs which they incorporate into architecture, furniture, clothing, appliance, vehicles, advertising, and other everyday items.

 

Learning Standard 4: Drafting, Revising, and Exhibiting

*     - -Produce work that shows an understanding of the concept of craftsmanship.

*   -   Follow the steps necessary to see a project through to completion.

*    - Be able to evaluate the quality of artwork based on evaluation criteria in a given rubric.

*    -  Help prepare artwork for group or individual public exhibitions and/or contests.

 

  Learning Standard 5:  Critical Response

*   -   Help prepare artwork for group or individual public exhibitions and/or contests

*   -   Begin to be able to discuss the Elements of Art in relation to a given artwork.

*    -  Begin to be able to discuss the Principles of Design in relation to a given artwork.

*   -   Demonstrate the ability to compare and contrast two or more works of art using appropriate vocabulary.

*    -  Be aware of a variety of architectural styles popular during the history of mankind and be able to identify regions of the world where they might be found.

 

 

Learning Standard 6: Purposes and Meanings in the Arts

*     - Explain how the subject matter and/or form of an artwork reflects the  events, ideas, religions, and/or customs of a people living at a particular time in history.

*    -  Describe how the art and commonly produced products of a given culture can shape and be influenced by what is important to that society.

 

  Learning Standard 7: Roles of Artists in Communities

*    -  Be aware of the role of artists changes in different cultures and historical periods.

*  -    Explain how at least two different societies, past and present, have trained and supported artists.

*      Identify and describe careers in at least one art form.

 

 Learning Standard 8:  Concepts of Style, Stylistic Influence, and Stylistic Change

*    -  Identify several well-known artists or architects and or their most well known works of art.

*  -    Be aware that there are different  styles of art and architecture and identify characteristics associated with these styles.

*   -   Identify and describe characteristic features of  Art from one time period, or a style of art from at least one culture, and cite a well-known artist associated with that style.

    

Learning Standard 9:  Inventions, Technologies, and the Arts

*-      Identify and describe examples of how the discovery of new inventions and technologies, or the availability of new materials brought about changes in the arts in various time periods and cultures.

* -     Identify and describe examples of how contemporary artists use computer technology in their work.

 

Learning Standard 10:  Interdiscipinary Connections

*  -    Integrate knowledge gained in other disciplines with art design skills to enhance his learning and aid in the creation of his artwork.
