El Calafate is a little village in Patagonia, Argentina, on the southern end of Lake Argentino. It is a short drive from Calafate to Los Glaciares National Park, which includes the Perito Moreno Glacier.

We hiked a portion of the glacier - above and to the right. (No, that's not either of us at left--that's one of the tour guides showing off.)  Below, at the end of the hike, Carlos partakes of the reward--tables set with bottles of scotch.

Periodically the glacier advances over Lago Argentino, forming a natural dam which separates the two halves of the lake. With no escape route, the water level on one side of the lake can rise by up to 90 feet above the level of the other side. The enormous pressure eventually breaks the ice barrier, in a spectacular rupture.

This dam/rupture cycle is irregular, recurs anywhere between once a year to less than once a decade. Here’s where it was last ruptured--shot taken from our boat ride to the hiking area.

Above and left, our hotel in Calafate had the most amazing borders of lavender.  Photo at right shows a shopping area off the main street of town.
