Periodically the glacier advances over Lago Argentino, forming
a natural dam which separates the two halves of the lake. With no escape route, the water level on one side of the lake can
rise by up to 90 feet above the level of the other side. The enormous pressure eventually breaks the ice barrier,
in a spectacular rupture.

This
dam/rupture cycle is irregular, recurs anywhere between once a year to less than once a decade. Here’s where
it was last ruptured--shot taken from our boat ride to the hiking area.
