4. Effectively use Microsoft Office and the world wide web in the publishing step

4. Allow participants to utilize projects and activities in their classrooms

 Higher-Order Applications of Technology:

Students must master keyboarding skills, become familiar with various software applications including Inspiration and Microsoft Office, and be able to navigate through the Internet in order to successfully complete assignments.

Outline:

  1. Review the steps of the writing process.
  2. Using the topic of “Halloween”, have teachers create a web on Inspiration complete with graphics and show them how to use the “outline” feature. Note how students can attach graphics and colors to their ideas.
  3. Using Microsoft Word, have teachers either write mock rough draft of a Halloween story or use a student’s writing sample.
  4. Emphasize the use of “inserting comments” in Microsoft Word and the power they have to convey constructive criticism.
  5. Using a Smartboard and an LCD projector, pull up a sample of prose. Using “Tools” in Microsoft Word, the writer can instruct the computer to check for particular spelling and grammar errors. Certain grammar errors can be targeted, such as capitalization and punctuation. Emphasize how teachers can use the Smartboard to peer review “anonymous” prose
  6. Using the list below, pick one site to publish the finished prose on.
