SECTION 1 Introduction of IBPO
President Cunningham introduced Mike McKenna, President of the Norfolk Police Departments International Brotherhood of
Police. The Board has been exploring options to change our charter and leave
IUPA due to past dissatisfaction with IUPA’s response to our needs. And
in an effort to give all members better representation in crucial times. IBPO
offers more support legally to assist Mr. Imprevento if needed. In the near future collective bargaining will likely begin to take place in Virginia. IBPO will provide arbitrators if needed for pay, etc. IUPA
does not provide this service and it would cost several thousand dollars to hire one on our own. In the next few weeks each member, and non member will received a packet going over all that
IBPO offers. Their website is www.IBPO.org Dues will have to be increased from the current rate of $20 per
month to likely $25 or $30 per month. Direct drafts will continue. New
drafts will have to be filled out once the change is completed. Members will
be notified.
SPOA
will once again provide a refreshment tent for “WORKING” officers at the Fest site, including members and non
members. Please remember the tent is only for working officers and not family
members. The tent is a costly endeavor and we can only feed working officers
on site.
In
an upcoming meeting with the Chief President Cunningham would like to discuss
any issues that members may have. One of which is need for change in the current
uniform work schedule. VP Williams is asking any member who has an idea for a
proposed schedule t o please send it to her via e mail, (detjwms@msn.com), in the next 14 days. Members are encouraged to respond to
Capt Rittenhouse’s request for uniform and schedule ideas as well. He has
asked, so here’s your chance to respond.
It is our impression that Chief Bennett is working
hard with the best interest of the Department at heart. The lines of communication
in the Department are much more open than in the past. So take this opportunity
and respond to any e mail request you receive from supervisors about ideas for different areas that they have been tasked
with to explore. Please don’t take the old attitude of “why
bother no one will listen”; the Chief has demonstrated that he wants to hear from all of us. Don’t miss any opportunity you are given.
Section 4 pay compression
Pay
Compression is a problem for both the officers and communications. Treasurer
Beth Gayle and Secretary Erin Hughes are researching and preparing a presentation on Communications pay problems. IBPO President McKenna was asked if they would be able to assist with research and preparation of
billboards or DVD’s when the time came to start a public appeal for support in officers pay issues. Another perk that IBPO provides; they have their own recording studio and can prepare a DVD for release. Items such as billboards and DVDs are all included in the cost of our membership with
them. In the past when we did billboards placed around the city, the cost was
ours and Mike Imprevento donated a large portion of the cost.
