What is duet roleplaying?

Duet roleplaying involves just two individuals: a Narrator and a player. The Narrator (sometimes called GM) runs the world and its characters (known as non-Player Characters or NPCs) while the player runs the hero of the game (known as a Player Character or PC).

I started using the term 'duet' due to dissatisfaction with the terms '1-on-1' and 'solo' which are used by the RPG community for two-person roleplaying. '1-on-1' has always sounded too adversarial or kinky to my ears; now that I have said that it will likely sound that way to you as well, I am sorry about that. I have mostly used 'solo', but there are scenarios and materials for just one person running a roleplaying game for themselves that are truly 'solo'. Thus I had a need for a new term and 'duet' was an obvious and perfect choice. Duet roleplaying is about two individuals harmonizing and engaging in complex roleplaying that can be a sort of music from the right point of view.

The term 'campaigns' (i.e. duet campaigns) is a staple of RPGs and reflects a series of adventures that are strung together to create a broader story. Adventures are the basic component of roleplaying games and most occupy one or several sessions. Often adventures stand alone, but, from my experience, most duet roleplaying is focused on campaigns where one adventure builds upon what happened in the previous adventure.

Duet campaigns are different than the typical campaigns of most roleplaying games where a GM runs a group of friends through some adventure. The main difference is that duet campaigns are faster paced and involve more roleplaying as with just two individuals there is almost constant interaction and the duet player has a far more ability to direct the adventure than with the typical group of players. Another difference is the ease of scheduling, with only two individuals it is far easier to schedule sessions and as often the two are either roommates, significant others, siblings, or at least good friends there are lots of opportunities for roleplaying. Certainly, duet campaigns aren't for everyone, but my goal is to provide resources for those who it is for, and there are a good number of us.
