The Historical Society of Watertown presents

The Corpse in the Cellar:

or the Posthumous Adventures of

Sheriff George Corwin,

a Tale of the Salem Witch Trials

an illustrated lecture by

Marilynne K. Roach

Many dubious anecdotes have collected around the real tragedies of the witch trials held at Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Despite the four centuries of nonsense that has reduced the memory of actual individuals to stereotypes, some legends prove stranger than fiction.

Come hear the rumors attached to the untimely death of the Essex County Sheriff in charge of the prisoners and executions, to the reputed revenge of his enemies, and to what really may have happened to the body.

Marilynne K. Roach is the author of The Salem Witch Trials: a Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Community Under Siege; and an associate editor of Records of the Salem Witch-Hunt.
