Flor is Coming to University Hospital
Flor is a little girl with "The worst case of Ricketts I've ever seen", according to Dr. Brad Olson of SUNY Upstate Medical University.  Brad treated her when he was part of the CNY Medical Mission trip this past February.

Dr. Olson is working with Dr. Tom Welch, Dr. Danielle Katz, and Bonnie Adams, RN, and wife of the bishop to get Flor the surgery she needs in Syracuse.  This type of surgery is simply not available in El Salvador for Flor.

It is hoped that Flor can travel with Irma Alvarado in August when she visits New Jersey and CNY as a representative of the women of the Salvadoran church.

CAFTA Moves Toward Approval

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A controversial free trade agreement with Central America cleared its first hurdle in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday, as the U.S. Congress edged toward final votes on the pact in coming weeks.

The House Ways and Means Committee approved a draft bill to implement the U.S.-Central American Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, by a vote of 25-16. Two Democrats joined Republicans in support of the pact. One Republican voted against it.

The panel's nonbinding recommendations now go to the White House, which is preparing final CAFTA legislation to send to Congress. The Senate Finance Committee narrowly approved a similar set of recommendations on Tuesday.

Twenty-fifth anniversary of assassination
The faithful and the church of San Juan Nonualco are commemorating the murder of Padre Cosme Spessoto, who was assassinated while speaking from the altar of the church in La Paz on the evening of June 14, 1980.  Padre Spessoto was an idealistic youth and was led to become a Franciscan.  The Dioceses of Santa Ana and La Paz are pressing for canonization for Padre Spessoto.

The article in La Prensa Grafica does not discuss why he was murdered, nor is there a single mention of him in English on the web.  I presume he died for reasons similar to those that killed Monsignor Romero.

Below a short quote from Padre Spessoto's writing:

Message from Jeremy Sites

Saludos...

I have arranged for Irma Alvarado to come for a visit to Central New York from August 15, when she will be brought up from New Jersey, to August 19, when she will return to El Salvador from New Jersey. I am hoping to arrange for Irma to get to know as many  people as possible, to have a great time, and to see people she has met in previous travels.

She works very hard in El Salvador, so we are hoping to give her time to relax and enjoy. She is potentially the first woman to become an Episcopal priest in El Salvador.

I know some of you will be on vacation at the time, and won't be able to see her.

Let me know your ideas... I envision a picnic on the lake (Skaneateles)  of course!
