Growth for the Smallest Producers
Cooperative Century XXI has announced a certification plan for the smallest coffee producers.  Through the plan the producers will be able to export and sell their production at a guaranteed price of $121 per quintal (1 quintal = 100 kg or 220 lbs).  The project is being organized jointly by Proexcafé and Nestlé of England.  The fixed price will allow small producers to plan their businesses with more certainty.  The project will also work with farmers on development and diversification.  (Those of you who don't follow the coffee market probably don't know that coffee has varied between $0.42 and $3.15 per pound over the past ten years on the New York Board of Trade.  Even in the past year the price has varied between $0.84 and $1.36)

Can't Take Delta to Venezuela
Delta, my favorite airline going south, has been thrown out of Venezuela.

CARACAS, Venezuela - Venezuela has prohibited Continental Airlines and Delta Air Lines from flying into this South American nation and is restricting American Airlines, Francisco Plaz, the president of the National Aviation Institute, said.

Speaking late Thursday, Plaz said that the measure was taken because the U.S. FAA had established a similar ban on commercial jets registered in Venezuela 10 years ago due to safety violations.

The ban would take effect on March 1, Plaz told the local Globovision television channel.

Lutheran Bishop Speaks Out Against Proposed Immigration Law
Medardo Gómez, the Lutheran bishop of El Salvador, has spoken forcefully against the anti-immigration legislation being propsed by the Bush adminsitration.  "We interpret this law to be a treacherous premediated threat, since our country will be seriously affected if it is approved." said the bishop.  The law makes it a criminal act to take in a relative who has arrived in the US without papers, according to the bishop.  He pointed out that there are approximately two million Salvadorenos is the US -- many without papers.
