Richmond's Heritage and Future
When this 1880s photo was taken from Swan Island, the ice industry was booming, and some of Richmond's biggest ships
were being built. Yet the recent war and its aftermath had depleted the local population, and hard times were ahead.
Within 20 years, these two high-profit, local industries would be all but finished.
How does our region's history speak to us today? How do we learn from the mistakes
and successes of the past, and invest wisely in tomorrow's local and statewide economy?
I welcome your thoughts as I go door to door this summer and fall, or at the "contact us" button to the left. Next
week, I'll share a few of my own thoughts on this subject.
Yours for tomorrow -
Seth

HOW BAD IS IT, DOC? -- NY Times Interactive Map of State Budget Shortfalls in the U.S.
Note: most states have major budget shortfalls. Those that do not are largely states with strong fossil
fuel (TX, AK, WY, WV) or food (IN, SD, OR, WA) based economies.
