is the Chinese character, romanized with various spellings such as: Tom, Thom, Tan, Tam, Tham, Taam, Tann, Tain, Tarm, Hom, Hum, Ham, Harm, in most cases, these spellings are English transliterations of this Chinese family surname.

This Tom Genealogy webpage is for helping, sharing, exchanging genealogical information and experiences with members of the Tom family / clan, however, it also strives to assist all that have an interest, whether basic or advanced, in pursuing genealogical research, which is at times difficult and exasperating, but, in the end, most rewarding!

The interest and research on Chinese ancestry and genealogy is a quest for our own identity, of who we are, where we come from, and how we have changed; it provides a metric for how far we have come and survived since the arrival of our ancestors, and is a record of the cumulative influences shaping what we are today.

Chinese genealogy is more than just compiling or finding family lineage charts, it also includes researching, reading, recording: personal and genealogical names, personal / official documents such as diaries, journals, birth, marriage, and death certificates; immigration, military, citizenship records; family histories, bibles, photographs, mementos, and involves the entire family regardless of age, generation and gender. Oral histories need to be recorded before these opportunities are gone and surprisingly, it is the overseas Chinese that care most about their genealogy.

It would be wonderful if we could all speak, read and write Chinese in both its traditional and simplified forms, unfortunately, this is not the case and this situation must not be allowed to discourage you in researching you r family / clan genealogy. Perhaps in the next life, I will have all these language skills – admittedly, it is harder but not impossible to find your place in the family genealogy lineage.

It is also not necessary to try and compile 30 or 40 generations of lineage – since Chinese families / clans have been keeping their genealogies: they have been re-copied and revised over the course of centuries – so there is no real ownership or copyright. If you can identify 2 or 3 of your ancestors in the family lineage – you will have discovered the entire span of lineage before them and also established your place in the lineage.

If I can, I am more than happy to answer some questions, but, please do not expect me to do your genealogy research for you. Remember, other members of your family / clan are out there – actively researching the family genealogy – good luck !

"Family genealogy and history are the legacy of our precious heritage hat should be preserved and passed on to future generations"
