
Marvin E. “Jack” Avey
KEYSER, W.Va.
– Marvin Ellis “Jack” Avey, 80, of Keyser, went to be with his Lord on
Thursday, August 28, 2008, at WMHS Braddock Campus, Cumberland, Md.
Born May 7, 1928 in Defiance, Ohio,
he was a son of the late Arthur Stewart and Dorothy M. (Mohley)
Avey.
Mr. Avey was employed by CSX
Transportation. He was initially a
Telegrapher, first at West Cumbo, WV and later as
Manager/Wire Chief in Communication Office in Cumberland, MD. He was promoted to Communications Traffic
Engineer in 1958, Baltimore,
MD, a position he relinquished
with his knowledge of communications and various codes. He continued with CSX as agent in various
towns, was agent and part time yardmaster at Keyser and retired from office of
Manager Freight Service, Cumberland,
MD in June, 1987.
Jack was a member of Fort Cumberland Lodge
Brac and Lodge 16 A.M., Boy Scout Troops 15 and 12, Cumberland and was
assistant scoutmaster or troop 27, Hedgesville with Rev. E. C. Bateman. He was a graduate of Hedgesville High School,
having been president of sophomore and junior classes, and as president of
Student Council in senior year. He was captain of the football team for two
years and earned letters also in basketball and track. He attended Potomac State
for a short time, choosing to continue with CSX at that time, still the B&O
Railroad.
He was a member of Grace United
Methodist Church
and had served as Chairman of Council of Ministries, member of Administrative
Board, taught 7th and 8th grade Sunday school, a member of
Shepherds Club and Prayer Coordinator of the Church for several years. He was direct descent (grandson) of Jacob
Albright, founder of the Evangelical United Brethren
Church and the 6th bishop
of Methodist Church
in the United States. He was a supporter of the Crystal Cathedral
Church, Garden
Grove, CA of Billy Graham Evangelical
Association and supported St. Jude
Hospital, Memphis
Tenn.
Jack will be well remembered as a hunter
and fisherman, and for his strong feelings for conservation of our natural
resources and wildlife, caring for the wild turkey on his and other properties
and the hunt of black bear in West Virginia, New York, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.
He was a member of Peterkin Conference Hunt Club and
Trout Unlimited.
Surviving are his wife Virginia Lee
(Lucas) Avey; his son David Mark Avey of Keyser; his two daughters, Ellen M. Barr
and husband Robert of Savannah, GA and Rhonda S. Bailey and husband Richard of
Seattle, Wash; his two brothers, Emil “Jim” Avey of Parsons, WV and Miles “Joe”
Avey of Rawlings, MD and his two sisters, Mary Lou Bane and husband William of
Keyser and Judy A. Arnold and husband Wayne of Keyser. He is also survived by grandchildren, Crysti Hemerick, Lori Ann
Russell, Robin Barr, Erin Barr and Victoria Bailey and
seven great-grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Markwood
Funeral Home, Keyser, on Sunday, August 31, 2008, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9
p.m. Funeral services will be conducted
at the funeral home on Monday, September 1, 2008 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend
Vickie K. Minnich officiating.
Interment will follow in Potomac Memorial
Gardens, Keyser.
