Alton W. Grimes, Sr.
GLOUCESTER,
VA - Alton W. Grimes, Sr., 90, of Gloucester, Virginia
passed away on Friday, April 17, 2009.
He was born in Norfolk, Virginia
December 27, 1918 the son of the late Edward Allen Grimes and Carrie Whichard Grimes. He
was also preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Mauda (Ashby) Grimes
(formally a resident of Keyser/ New
Creek, West Virginia).
Mr. Grimes was a resident of Norfolk for 89 years
until moving to Gloucester House, a Commonwealth Assisted Living Facility. Mr.
Grimes attended Maury
High School, was employed
by the U.S. Civil Service Norfolk Navy Yard until April 1942 when he enlisted
in the U.S. Army and accepted a Commission as an Infantry Officer.
Mr. Grimes served in Europe
where he was severely wounded in 1944; during his service he was awarded the
Combat Infantry Badge, the Distinguished Unit Badge, EAME with 2 Bronze Stars
and the Purple Heart. After his retirement from the Army, Mr. Grimes was
employed by the U.S. Civil Service, Naval Air Station Norfolk, where he retired
in 1973.
He is
survived by children; Alton W. Grimes Jr. and wife Carolyn, of Gloucester Va.,
Ella Louise Grimes-Babione, of Roanoke, Va., Thomas
Allen Grimes, of Moyock, NC.; grandchildren Benjamin S. Pallett
of Norfolk, Alton W. Grimes III, wife Mary Beth, and Andrew S. Grimes of
Charlotte NC, Katheryn Faye Grimes of Moyock, NC,
great grandchildren; Alton William and Barrett Caden
Grimes of Charlotte, NC
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 1:30
p.m. at Duling Cemetery, New Creek, with the Reverend
Daniel Stemple officiating. Military
honors will be accorded at the cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser.
