Mary Elizabeth Dills Wimer

TYBEE ISLAND, GA - Mary Elizabeth Dills Wimer, 102, formerly of 151 E Street, Keyser, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2009, at Oceanside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on Tybee Island, Georgia. She would have been 103 years old in six days.

Born on August 1, 1906, Mary was the daughter of Lida (Baker) and Lindsey Dills, and they lived on a dairy farm in Pennsylvania, close to the West Virginia border. She lived at home with her parents for 29 years and became an expert at cooking, sewing, quilting, canning, and needlework. She married Joseph Wimer in 1935, and they raised their two sons in Petersburg and Keyser, West Virginia.

Her parents, her husband, Joseph W. (Joe) Wimer of 31 years and her son, Harold E. of Savannah, GA. preceded her in death. Her brother, “Dutch” Dills, also preceded her in death.

Mary is survived by her daughter-in-law, Bonnie Belt Wimer (Harold) of Savannah, GA and children: Pamela Logue (Jerry) of Venice, Fl,; John B. Wimer (Becky) of Pittsburgh, PA; and Kathy Nelson (Danny) of Savannah, GA. Also surviving is her son, Ralph D. Wimer (Marcia) of Georgetown, TX, and children: Michael D. Wimer (Michelle) of Manhatten Beach, CA, and Melanie Ellsworth (Bret) of Frisco, TX.  Mary loved her family, which also included her eight great-grandchildren: Joseph, Anna, Daniel, and Michael Jonathon Wimer; Cooper Nelson; Ryann and Landry Ellsworth; and McKennon Wimer.

After her husband’s death in 1966, she continued to sew, do alterations, and quilt. She was actively involved in Homemakers Association, the Order of the Eastern Star, and Calvary United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, and was a good friend to everyone.  Known to have a” green thumb”, she gardened, raised African violets, and had a gift of finding four-leaf clovers. She once found a patch with one hundred twenty-one.

Mary spent several years living in Nebraska so she could be closer to Harold and Bonnie, but in the mid 1990’s she was happy to return with them to her hills in West Virginia. For the last year and a half, she lived in Savannah.

A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church, Keyser, WV, on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 11 a.m. with the Reverend William A. Linhart officiating.  Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to services.

Inurnment will follow in Potomac Memorial Gardens.

The arrangements have been entrusted to the Markwood Funeral Home, Keyser.
