The Mid-Atlantic Ukulele Invitational 2006 was held on June 24th in Annapolis, Maryland.  Events were informally kicked off the night before when uke players took over the back room of The 49 West Coffee House.  The official activities began at noon on Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church and School in Annapolis.  There were vendor displays from Dave Means (Glyph Custom Ukuleles), Debi Velasco of HOALOHA, Curt Sheller (Curt Sheller Publications),   Hula Monkey Ukulele Supply,  and Menehune Coffee.

Workshops included Nick Smiley (Right Hand Techniques), Curt Sheller (Jazz Chording and Advanced Techniques), Fred Fallin (Voice of Ukulele), and Dave Means (Maintaining, Adjusting and Building Ukuleles."

At 1:00 GordonVelasco hosted the afternoon free concert.which featured The George Fox Middle School Ensemble and The Hawaii State Society Ukulele Club.  Many special surprise guests also joined Gordon and Debi Velasco.

The evening concert was held at 8:00 PM in the Sanctuary.  Fred Fallin was the emcee.  Performers included Patsy Montelone, Victoria Vox, HOALOHA, Rick Russo and Renee Rogers, and The Fleastompers.  Don Peyton put together a great lineup for the evening concert.  It was a shame that the venue was uncomfortably hot for the first half of the concert.  Still, most fans stayed till the end and were well rewarded by some great music.  If you want to hear some of it for yourself, Victoria Vox and Rick Russo do have CDs for sale.  Victoria was dealing with quite a line of fans waiting to purchase her CD after the show.  "Victoria and her Jumping Flea" currently holds the number one position in my CD player!  I like especially "Le Vent Nous Portera,"  and Vox originals "My Darlin' Beau," and "Yodelayheehoo."

M.A.U.I. is absolutely the best ukulele bargain on the East Coast.  Cost was only $20.00 for the entire event.  The workshops were top notch.  Dave Means explained so well all the factors that go into making a good ukulele that I would never want to try it.  I could (and did) listen for hours to Fred Fallin tell of ukulele players and mobsters.

See the pictures below.  There is a video from the afternoon concert at the bottom of the page.  Most pictures will link to the artist's website.  See you at M.A.U.I 2007!
