Unlike many people, we planned to stay home for the Memorial Holiday. Russ was so excited to watch the 92nd Indy 500 anyway, and I had no desire to fight traffic and pay for gas anyway. I was happy to just work in the yard. The kids were just happy to play at home.

Friday was a normal work day (not a CWS Friday), so we both headed in like normal. I had a long day, but work's been a little slow so I found myself nearing the end of my ToDo list. The kids were at daycare and it was a beautiful day, so they had a great time playing with their friends. Russ, left work around noon to meet the guy who'd be installing our new Direct TV (satellite TV)…. Or so we thought.

The guy was there around 2:00. He looked our current cable system over, and then found he needed a part, so he headed over to Lusby (15 min drive) to meet another installer to get a part. He didn't return until after 4:00!. Apparently, the guy in Lusby didn't have the part, so he had to go to Waldorf (45 min away).

About this time, the boys and I arrived home. To my horror, he was installing a rather obtrusive dish right on the top roof of my house! I got out proclaiming my grievance, but Russ met me with, "Don't worry, he's got to move it anyway." WHEW! He looked around our yard, and came up with the idea that he should put the dish on a post in the front corner of our yard. I thought that was a much better spot, but after he'd mixed up our own quick crete (I thought I'd save him a trip to Lowe's and another 2 hour delay), dug a trench in our yard, puttered around until I brought him dinner (it was the least I could do, since he wasn't going to charge us for the post), and tried the dish on the corner of our yard, he finally decided there was no way we'd get satellite tv. Of course, if we cut down the huge oak tree in our back yard, we might have a chance. Obviously, we nixed the whole deal and sent him on his way. We just couldn’t figure out why he had to do all that when he could have just used a hand held GPS to find out if he could make a satellite connection in the first place!!

Russ was up early on Saturday morning because we decided to just upgrade our Metrocast cable to digital HD. He wanted to call Metrocast when they opened. It even ended up being a couple dollars cheaper. Russ was disappointed that he'd miss a couple of Indy races on ESPN Classic, but at least he'd still be able to watch the Indy 500 on our new 40" HDTV. He made us breakfast, and then I went outside to burn some leaves. The kids played in and out side. The weather was gorgeous, and even though I hate leaves, it felt so good to just sit in the sun. Since Russ didn't get his extra ESPN channels, he watched a Minor League Indy race on the computer… he's a die hard fan!

Later that afternoon, we went to pick up a couple things at Lowes and the grocery store. Russ ate some crabs while the boys and I had some salmon that I'd set out to thaw and needed to cook. We sat together and actually enjoyed watching the Indy 500 parade on TV. Since Liam didn't have a very good nap earlier, he was getting grouchy. He and Jaxson got a quick bath after dinner and I got them into bed a tad early. It did them both good.

As the sun was setting, Russ got the fire pit ready outside. It'd been a while since we just sat around the fire, and I was happy to have the chance. The evening was beautiful, and we ended up spending a few hours out there as we burned log after log, shared some wine, and just… talked. We had such a nice time that our discussion promted the idea to do it again the following night… and sleep out with the boys in the clubhouse!

Sunday was declared Indy Day. Though the boys and I are not as big of fans as Russ is, we could appreciate his enthusiasm, and went along with it as best we could. In the morning, we set up the little table top bowling game on the coffee table, and took turns rolling the marble into the tiny pins. Then the boys and I went outside again, and I started hauling the leaf ashes from the pit down the road to a drainage ditch. I could only take one wheelbarrow at a time, and be a bit on the stealthy side, but I had to do SOMETHING to get them out of the yard.

Then I started cleaning the clubhouse. It wasn't that bad, and especially easy when I ran an extension cord out there so I could suck up all the spider webs with the vacuum. Liam was VERY excited about our proposed camp out.

After lunch, I let the boys delay their nap a little so we could all watch the start of the big race. It was pretty cool. After a few laps though, I managed to get two hyper boys down for a nap.

S-LiamClownsAround.jpg S-JaxsonPlaysCarsOnFireplaceStoop.jpg

While the boys were napping, I went out to the clubhouse to put a tarp along the high edge of the roof. Rain had been seaping in under the eaves, so I hoped my idea would curb that. The forcast didn't call for rain, but I just figured I'd do that while I was working on it anyway. Russ kept me up to date with the status of the race. We all had a driver we were rooting for. I was supporting Lloyd with the WiiFit car, just because I enjoy that "game" for our Wii system. Russ had on his Danica Patrick shirt, so he was gung ho for her. Liam stuck with Marco Andretti, and I think he picked Tony Kanaan for Jax.

S-NewTV92ndIndy500.jpg S-FirstCampout-PowerlineReady.jpg

Once the boys got up from their nap, they came out to help me with the finishing touches on the clubhouse. I brought out a carpet and some pillows and blankets, and Liam brought in his faithful sleeping companion, Mikey the Monkey. Jax brought in his beloved School Bus. My WiiFit car was the first to go, and then Danica was clipped by another driver coming out of the pits. Marco and Tony made for good competitors right up to the end, but Scott Dixon took the checkered flag.

Russ made some steaks and we all ate outside. Then we made a fire in the fire pit, and made S'mores (although I substituted Keebler Fudge Stripe Cookies for graham crackers/chocolate). After it got a little dark, Russ took both boys up in the clubhouse to read a few stories. He tried to leave them both up there, but as soon as he turned out the light (even with the Superman night light), Jaxson began to scream. Even though we'd only be just below, sitting at the fire pit like we'd done the night before, Jaxson wasn't buying this plan at all. So, I took him inside, and he was eager to get in his crib. This prompted a little uneasiness with Liam, since now he had the clubhouse all to himself, but he was brave. We were only feet away from him, and all he had to do was look out the window, but he still took a bit to actually settle down. A while later, Russ and I were growing wearing too, so we decided to join Liam in the clubhouse. I went inside to fetch a half-asleep Jaxson, who had no trouble snuggling in against me on the clubhouse floor. So there we were… all four of us… and Cleo… sleeping in the clubhouse. Well, half of us anyway. Russ said that Liam talked his ear off until about midnight. Not that I got any better sleep. I didn't even think about taking up our air mattress, but I will NEXT time because that floor is no softer even if you do put a carpet and a couple of comforters under you!

Though Russ and I were pretty groggy the next day, I think we were all proud that we managed to accomplish our goal. It really was fun, and I figure it won't be long before both boys will be begging to do it again. I did a few chores on Memorial Day. Russ caught up on some better sleep on the couch in the den while the boys and I picked up a few toys. I burned another pile of leaves (can you tell this is my latest obsession?) and began unloading the clubhouse. Russ came out and started re-planting some corn.  I planted about 6 rows of beans.  My tomatoes are growing inside, but just aren't ready to get in the ground yet.

S-DadJaxsonPlantingCorn.jpg

When the boys' naptime came around, I joined them. After we all got up, we lingered on the couch in the den and watched a bit of the Deadliest Catch marathon. Then took the boys to the Elementary School playground so they could ride bikes for a little while. I called the folks (and Kate, who was visiting) while we were there. I had no ambition to make dinner that night, so Russ scrounged up some money for a pizza order and it tasted so good. We watched the first Narnia movie while we ate. I had also washed the canopies for the gazebos, so I put them back on after dinner.

I got the boys ready for bed with a good scrubbing (it'd been a dirty weekend) and was glad when Russ didn't seem to put out that I desired to go to bed myself around 9:00. It really was a great weekend. The weather was just beautiful, Russ got to watch a great race, and the boys got to Christen their clubhouse. Who needs to travel on Memorial Day weekend, when you can have this much fun AT HOME???

May 17th and 18th, 2008

During the week Erin and I went to Best Buy and looked at TVs. They had some sales on some popular name brands. I had been looking into Samsung and was impressed by them even though I have owned Sony’s or Toshiba’s the last few decades. We had a good salesperson that was very helpful in going over the latest technologies as a lot has changed in the last couple of years. Our TV in the bedroom is starting to go we started thinking to move the one in the den up there and get an HDTV for in the den. We finally settled on a Samsung 40” on clearance. It opened a can of worms since we decided to lose cable and try a dish now. It’s all supposed to come together this Friday. It will be really spectacular to watch the Indy 500 in HDTV. We both had to admit that there was a big difference in the picture. Since we are not taking a vacation this year this is the big family treat.

On Friday night we got the kids settled in and watched a really well written movie called Juno that has some buzz at the Oscars this year. We both enjoyed the film quite a bit. Earlier in the week Liam and Mommy spent two nights watched the original Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark. I served them popcorn as they snuggled to watch it. Liam seemed to really enjoy it and even put together his own Indiana Jones costume to wear around a couple of times this weekend. The next one is in the queue on Netflix.

 S-MomLIamIndianaJonesMovie.jpgS-LiamAsIndianaJones1.jpg

On Saturday we got up and went to do some morning errands. Erin suggested we go find a geocache while out. The day was breezy and pretty and things were starting to dry out from a rainy week where even our garage got a little water in it. We need to move the leaves left from the side of the house and have permission to borrow a friend’s truck when things dry out a little. I am also waiting for that to put my second batch of corn in the garden as well as the tomatoes and beans. Hopefully later this week or next weekend.

 S-Find270LandOfHearts-LLG.jpgS-Find270LandOfHearts-BoysWithCache.jpg

We stopped by the hobby store as I needed some paints but it was not opened yet so we went to Dorsey Park around the corner and had a nice hike with the boys to find the “treasure” in the woods. Jaxson got a ball and Liam a toy motorcycle and we also helped a cute little firefly geo-coin along while we traded in other items. No geocaching event is complete without some playground time, so the boys ran around and played for a little bit.

We then stopped by the hobby store which Liam always enjoys and then to get some groceries. In the afternoon I was transfixed by the Indy 500 qualifying. It was really busy as positions 12-33 were settled on. Erin mowed the backyard and the boys played inside and out of the house. Mom Day called and said Rich was throwing a surprise birthday bash for Kate at their Church so we said we would give Kate a call that evening. Mom Day is still recovering from her shoulder surgery. She is in our thoughts and prayers. The pain medication has been tough on her but she is getting better.

Saturday night I found an old show on You Tube to show Erin. It was called Mad Movies and it was basically dubs and changes of plots on old movies. She thought it was pretty funny. We also called Kate who sounded wonderful and really enjoyed the surprise party. Rich went the extra mile to create a special evening for Kate.

On Sunday we woke up and had a quick breakfast and played games with the boys in the living room. I got some quality time with both of the boys this weekend. Erin and I then tackled the front yard. She pitched in as it was going to rain and I had promised Liam I would set up the slot car track if he ate a good dinner the night before. After I came in we set it up and played for an hour or so. Liam loves when I set it up and we race. Erin busied herself with preparations for her Tastefully Simple party. This is a line of foods, spices, and drink mixes. She had a quite a nice crowd show up and I got to visit with an old buddy of mine, Joe, who came with his wife, Sandie, who Erin works with. I also watched the Indy 500 bump day which was quite exciting in the last hour. It looks like it will be a great race next Sunday. Liam and Jaxson also enjoyed playing with Erica, Piper, and Roselia. So much so that the boys were out like lights last night. Erin and I were pretty tired to so we both went upstairs pretty early and Erin fell asleep with no problem and I read for a while.

Mother's Day Weekend

It seemed like a long week with a short weekend. Liam was sick on Wednesday, so I stayed home with him and Jax. Then, since Liam still wasn't 100% better and Russ felt a cold coming on, he stayed home with the kids on Thursday. We all managed to get to work/daycare on Friday. That evening we had pot roast for dinner, but like usual with my post roasts, it was unfavorably dry.

Since the cleaning gal forgot to come, I vacuumed and steam cleaned the carpet in the den. I feel this is a lost cause, as I just can't get it clean. I'm fed up with it, but there's no money to replace it with laminate right now, so I'll just keep rearranging the throw rugs. ;0

Saturday morning was really nice. Russ took both boys out to breakfast so they could do a little Mother's Day shopping. He said they were very well behaved, and I relished in a morning of coffee and a good book. I enjoyed my solituded for a couple hours while they were gone, but then grew impatient with the silence of the house. I plain ol' missed them all, so I suppose that's a good thing.

The weather was rainy pretty much all weekend. I had a short time of half sun and no rain on Saturday afternoon, so while the boys were napping, I planted some hostas that Russ had purchased for me underneath the big oak tree in the back yard. Then, seeing as though I liked the look, but not the sparcity, I transplanted some other hostas that I'd put in the middle of the yard last Spring. Still not satisified, I remembered that I had three HUGE hostas out in the front landscaping that I felt pretty confident in separating out a little. So, all my hosta planting has good intentions, so I only hope they all continue to grow now!

S-HostasTransplantedToBack.jpg

The hosta project was about the only chore I had time to do outside. The rain kept us inside a lot, but I just enjoyed spending time with Liam and Jaxson. We made play-doh bowling balls, built castles in the basement play area, and battled our knights. Jaxson contined to wow us all with his decision to try a few more words. He's now got a repertoire of about 30, we are proud to say!

S-LiamAndMommyWorkOnPlayDoh.jpg

Saturday night, Russ and I watched a couple of documentaries through Netflix on the computer. One on the Shakers and one on - of all things - the MULLET! I tried out some of the Sangria Slush that I'd bought from Tastefully Simple. It was pretty good. I'm hosting a party of my own on Sunday, so now there is one more product I can honestly recommend!

Being that it was Mother's Day, I was instructed to stay in bed on Sunday morning. The boys went downstairs with a sleepy daddy and commenced to making pancakes. I only heard a few moments of frustration down there in the kitchen, but held my post as I sipped coffee, watched a little TV and continued to read my book. It wasn't long before I was presented with a Mother's Day breakfast in bed!

S-MothersDay2008-LiamWorksOnHisCard.jpg S-MothersDay2008-JaxsonWorksOnHisCard.jpg

Don't let Russ fool you... He can make some WONDERFUL pancakes... And I'm not just saying that because I didn't make them. He adds lemon or something, and they just taste so good. They all gave me great cards, and a box of chocolates (that Russ admitted came free with the 3 card purchase at CVS). I also got the Stinger Mosquito Killer that I'd asked for. I know that is not the "sweetest" of Mother's Day presents, but it is one more thing that allows me to enjoy my backyard, so I figure it's perfect!

S-MothersDay2008-MommyAndBoys.jpg

Russ and the boys returned back downstairs to watch a movie and give me a little more solitude. I soaked up another hour or so of reading, but then, like the day before, began to long for family company. So, I ventured downstairs for hugs, conversation... And to get the laundry started. ;) It was a great Mother's Day for sure.

May 2nd-4th, 2008

Thursday I was out of work after getting the stomach bug Erin had suffered with earlier in the week. Thursday night we watched our favorites Survivor and then Lost at ten. Erin also caught up with her Mom and Kate on the phone.

Congrats to Dad for the Paul Harris Rotary Award!

Paul Harris was one of the Founders of Rotary and was very involved in the development of Rotary which grew from a single club in Chicago in 1905 into the global organization we know today. The Paul Harris Award was set up in memory of his work to recognize outstanding contributions to the ideals of Rotary. It can be awarded by a Rotary Club to any person, whether a Rotarian or not, who is deemed worthy of the honour. A Paul Harris Award costs $1000 which is paid to Rotary Foundation. The recipient is known as a Paul Harris Fellow, and receives a medallion on a blue and gold ribbon, a special lapel badge and a citation signed by the President of R.I. and the Chairman of Rotary Foundation Trustees.

On Friday I felt better but was tired but things had to get done. Erin, the cleaning lady, was nice enough to postpone her cleaning until Friday so we skedaddled out of the house with the boys.

Erin had a 10:00 appointment for therapy on her shoulder. She thinks it may be a smidgen better but her range of motion is very limited much like my hip and leg from certain angles. They have already scheduled an operating time and will scrape her collar bone down to give the inflammation and bursitis more room. She is in the last three weeks of therapy. She had cortisone shot earlier in the week and she said it hurt more this time getting it so we shall see. Erin’s Mom is going through the same problems and is scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks.

While Erin was in getting her therapy I decided to do something leisurely with the boys before we started working hard later. They love planes and the day was bright and sunny so we stopped by at the base museum to see the planes. There was a school tour there too.

S-PaxRiverNavalMuseum-LiamRidesThePelican.jpgS-PaxRiverNavalMuseum-JSFFighter.jpg

S-PaxRiverNavalMuseum-BoysUnderS-3Engine.jpgS-PaxRiverNavalMuseum-BoysTractorRide1.jpg

Liam and Jax got a couple of little planes at the museum and enjoyed me lifting them up to see the models. After the museum we went out to look at the real planes on static display and run around and watch the birds nesting in the wings. We all three enjoyed the time.

 S-PaxRiverNavalMuseum-BoysOnTheTractor.jpgS-PaxRiverNavalMuseum-A-6LoadedUp.jpg

After picking up Erin we went down into Lexington Park and had a nice lunch at a great little restaurant called the Mixing Bowl. Alas the sun and PEREFCT weather beckoned us to get started. We went to Lowes and I went through the line three times as we got mulch, top soil, three new trees, and some Mole Solar Sensors to try and pulse the varmints out of the yard. By the time we got home with both vehicles full it was time to put the kids down for a nap. We went into overdrive at that point getting all the mulch down. We knew immediately that we would need more and would go to Lowes again Saturday. I got the top soil into the garden area but at that point we both were out of gas.

 S-FrontHouseSpring2008.jpgS-SideLookingUpTowardJapaneseMaple.jpg

Friday night we enjoyed playing the Wii for a little bit but were both tired and sore.

Saturday we got around and went straight to Lowes and got more mulch and then headed right back to work on the yard. The kids enjoyed playing out in the back with me on this 4 star day. By the way it has been a long time since I remembered such a beautiful weekend of PERFECT weather. Erin finished with the mulch in the front and some raking and also planted the flower beds. While she was doing that I got the top soil down and retilled the garden and then leveled it so it is now ready for planting. I am going to put the corn (my big experiment this year) Monday or Tuesday evening as we are getting light showers Wednesday.

 S-GardenReady.jpgS-HostasNearGarage.jpg

After getting this done Erin went in to get lunch around while I started digging the holes for out new trees along the fence line. Our neighbor’s garage door faces our backyard and I always feel like we are looking right into there house as the door is open most of the time. They are very nice people but I just want to give us both more privacy. Our holly bushes failed in the drought last year so this year we went for hardy spruce trees which should top out at 15 feet tall by 4 feet around. I went in and ate lunch and the kids got their naps again.

 S-RussPlantingTrees.jpgS-CleoHelpsTransplantTree.jpg

Erin came out and while I lowered the trees and got them ready she transplanted one lonely Spruce we had in the yard over to make an even four along the fence line. She then mulched the area and got the hammock set up while I mowed the front yard.

 S-NewMulchNewHostas.jpgS-ErinPutsUpHammock.jpg

Alas we once again were whooped so we ordered pizza and just watched the Kentucky Derby with the kids. It was a great race marred by a tragedy on the second place filly Eight Belles breaking both front ankles and being put down where she dropped. Liam was asking questions about what happened so I tried to explain as sensitive as I could be to 4 YO ears why the horse went to heaven. As soon as I was done he says “Can I have some Candy?” so I guess he was over it as Erin and I both chuckled.

After the kids were in bed we watched the 40 Year Old Virgin movie we had seen before but honestly we were so tired and sore we didn’t feel like thinking or moving.

Sunday was a little quieter. We played more with the kids and enjoyed their company. In the morning Mommy and Liam set up his shake and go track. He was allowed to get a toy for filling out his sticker board for not sucking on his finger for two weeks. We are trying to wean him because he was getting a nasty wound on one finger. We are now watching a nasty wound on his big toe that has troubled him for a few days. When I was up and around I played with him for a bit to racing.

 S-LiamShakeAndGoRaceCars.jpg

Erin took Ash and Cleo to the dog park which is something she often does on Sunday mornings. While there, she called Brian to catch up a little.  The weather was again great with a few more clouds. Erin mowed in the back and Liam found a toad under the back patio. Every time I think to plug that hole in the concrete Liam meets a new friend. He has no fear of them he just scoops them right up and is very gentle with them. We also got a chance to admire a couple of days of hard work as the yard was looking very colorful. The boys even got some hammock time in. I started getting hungry so I offered to run to the grocery with Liam to get some groceries and pick up some seafood already cooked for dinner. We all enjoyed dinner together.

 S-LiamJaxInHammock.jpgS-LiamAndBackyardToad.jpg

On another note we really cherished this past week watching our little boy Jaxson discover the English language. I can not count all the new words that boy spoke this past week. It has all the sudden clicked. There is still a muscle problem with him pronouncing some words but some like bus, bubble, and Cleo come out perfect. The Speech Classes have helped. He goes back with Erin next Monday and our assignment as parents was to write down all his words spoken. I don’t think we can get them down fast enough now!

 S-MisterBrownEyes.jpg

Erin had a nice chat with her sister Dawn and then we decided to at least start a movie that her Brother Brian had recommended. It is called Perfume and we watch half of it last night and will finish it Tuesday or Wednesday. It is an odd but captivating story about a man born in France and with an uncanny sense of smell and how he stumbles into the perfume industry. It sounds quirky and it is but in a very good way. We can’t wait to finish it. Brian finds these gems and we never go wrong watching them. After Erin fell asleep I started in on the last few chapters of the Pretty Boy Floyd book I have been reading. I just have a little bit more to go and then I will start Band of Brother
